I have extensive training in both spoken and written Chinese. I have studied advanced Mandarin at Harvard College, the Middlebury Summer Language Schools and Princeton-in-Beijing. I have also studied the earlier, literary form of Chinese, often known as Classical Chinese, both as an undergraduate at Harvard College and as a doctoral candidate at Princeton University. I am in the midst of writing my doctoral dissertation now.
In addition, I have a good deal of practical experience using Mandarin. I have lived and worked in Beijing for several years, I am a qualified Chinese-English medical interpreter and I have considerable experience as a translator for environmental organizations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council.
I have several years of experience teaching ESL to both children and adults. My first job out of college was at Beijing Normal University in the People's Republic of China, where I taught ESL to graduate students. More recently, I spent a couple of years living with a Chinese family in Beijing, where I taught ESL and Latin to their twin children. We had a wonderful time.
I studied Latin as an undergraduate at Harvard College, where I had a combined major in Classics and East Asian Studies. When I went on to graduate school, I turned my focus to Chinese literature, but I continue to rely on Classical literary theory in my research. And between 2008 and 2010, I found myself putting my Classical studies to use in an entirely different way as I lived with a Chinese family in Beijing and tutored their twin children in ESL and Latin. I had the time of my life.
