In January I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from Boston University. While at BU, I was the recipient of both an Elizabeth Leonard Teaching Fellowship and a Robert Pinsky Global Fellowship, the first of which gave me the opportunity to teach a one-semester poetry workshop to juniors and seniors at Boston Arts Academy, while the latter allowed me to travel to Bolivia for three months in order to study Aymara, one of many Bolivia's many indigenous languages. I also have experience teaching and tutoring ESL, having obtained my CELTA certification in Seville, Spain, during the summer of 2008.
What I love about tutoring is the chance to take teaching to the one-on-one level, to tailor the approach to an individual. Recently I've been tutoring a nine-year-old who is terrified of writing, not for a lack of ideas but because he cannot write fast enough to keep up with the creativity in his own head; so often we make a game of things, taking turns sentence-by-sentence until he has found a rhythm for the story. Of course we can't just play games the whole time, but it's instances like that, where I'm excited and my student is excited, that make me love teaching.
