I love to read and write, and I think part of my job as a tutor is to help students enjoy their work. While I was an honors student at Vassar College, I never received less than an "A" on any essay
I wrote, and was awarded Vassar's J. Howard Howson Prize for my senior thesis in comparative religion
. My approach to teaching writing
covers composition, essay structure, grammar
and style, and is designed to give students a set of steps that they can eventually use on their own in writing essays. I believe that reading
great writing is essential to learning to write well. I can also help students improve their research skills, navigating library resources both online and in the stacks.
I come from a family of scholars and educators, so teaching is a natural passion for me. My father was a sociology
professor, and my grandfather and great-grandfather both philosophy
professors. During the school year, I teach drawing
and design in the BFA program at New Hampshire Institute of Art
, and have also taught in the art departments at The University of New Hampshire and American University in Washington, D.C
. My experience also includes two years in France teaching ESL
to public elementary school students. I speak French
at an intermediate level, and can tutor in French conversation, reading and writing. I have worked for three years as an ESL tutor with private students in Boston and Washington, D.C. At Vassar I also studied psychology
, philosophy, art history
, education, folklore, anthropology
and dance, all of which inform my work as an artist and educator. I earned my MFA in painting
from American University where my coursework included art history
and art theory; during my graduate studies I was awarded a Mellon Foundation grant and a travel prize for research in Spain.
In 2013 I published an article in EBSCO's Critical Survey of Mythology and Folklore.
I also offer lessons in drawing and painting, art appreciation, and cooking
In short, my education and teaching experience have given me a rich foundation on which to draw as a tutor. I have a broad knowledge base in the humanities, and I am friendly, organized and empathetic. I look forward to hearing from you!
