I earned a Masters in Agriculture, Food & Environmental policy from Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition in 2011 and a BA in International Studies from Elon University. I currently work as an Executive Assistant for a small non-profit and do catering sales for a Cambridge-based catering company.
I have experience working with elementary school students as well as assisting graduate students (both native and non-native English speakers) with various writing assignments.
I graduated college with honors (3.5 GPA) and produced exceptional written work for all of my classes. I excelled at my College Writing course, in which the main focus was how to construct strong persuasive arguments through the process of writing, reading, and editing. I can help my students create polished and well-organized written work of all kinds, at any level, including middle and high school essays or book reports, college-level research papers, and even annotated bibliographies. As a graduate student, I submitted high-quality written work, and enjoyed being asked to proofread and edit friends' work, as well.
I have four years of experience as an administrative assistant, so my attention to detail is reflected in everything I do. I have a knack for finding, correcting, and explaining written errors, and would stress to my students that an ability to write clearly and effectively is the most important communication tool you can possess - so let's perfect it!
I currently work with 3rd through 5th graders in a classroom and garden setting. I teach the students basic plant, soil, and seed science through lessons that involve various hands-on activities, songs, and games. These lessons work to achieve the Massachusetts Earth Science Learning Standards for 3rd graders, while the 4th and 5th graders are taught these subjects in a less-structured after-school environment. I gained additional experience working with 2nd through 6th graders, again in a garden setting, during the summer in North Carolina.
The 3rd grade teaching in Boston is done using pre-determined lesson plans, but I have worked with the teachers to refine these plans based on their knowledge of their students. We discuss how visual materials and certain activities (e.g. songs) help reinforce the main lesson points, and try to use the best mix of those methods to ensure the Learning Standards are met.
While I have not specifically taught reading, writing, or math in an elementary school, I am effective at communicating with students in this age range and believe I can make a difference in your child's grades in these subjects, as well. I would try to find the methods that work best for the student, making the tutoring session fun, engaging, but focused and effective.
