For the last seven years, I have been a substitute teacher at the Shrewsbury Public Schools. As a substitute teacher, I perform the duties of an absent teacher at the elementary and middle school grade levels. I am currently substituting at the Oak and Sherwood middle schools in all the core subjects.
In May of 2011, I substituted for 7th grade math class for a week and taught students Probability unit and helped them with some MCAS problems.
In 2007, I was a long-term substitute teacher for an eighth grade science class, during which I taught the curriculum and administered (and graded) projects, tests, and quizzes. I have also substituted long-term in an academic support class, where I gave individual attention to a small group of students.
I also have experience in one-on-one tutoring, especially with students in math classes at the middle schools. I am familiar with the mathematics curriculum and have cleared the MTEL middle school math test and the reading subset of the MTEL communications and literacy test; I plan on taking the final writing subset in the near future. My work and education experience, however, is not restricted to math. I have a diversified work experience and a strong background in computer science as well.
My style of tutoring is informal and fun, but rigorous. I usually explore different problem solving techniques with the student until we find the ones that work best. I give lots of practice problems to ensure the student is confident and excelling in the specific areas. I also help with homework. I stay within the school curriculum so that the student does not get overwhelmed with extra work. My goal is to help the student achieve a better grade in class.
