Dear Student/Parent,

I have eight years experience as a pubic school Art teacher for grades K-12. Currently, I am a substitute teacher in the Ayer/Shirley Regional School District for grades K-12 and am substituting in all subject matters. While I have my own special strengths in subject matters; my main strength is the ability to impart a love of learning in whatever subject I am involved with. I am comfortable with students with special needs, as well as with advanced learning students looking to sharpen their skills in reading for comprehension and writing.

I taught a painting class at the Medium Security Prison facility in Shirley for a period of six years. I have worked church youth groups in both Milton and Shirley. I get along well with young people and treat them with respect and consistency. Instilling a sense of possibility and a love for learning itself is the most valuable asset I have to offer; more than the specific skills I have acquired in my years in the workplace.

In addition to Art, English, History, etc., I have been a member of a running club for many years and have extensive experience in competition - which can be an asset for the physically enthusiastic youngster. I believe you will be pleased with the result if you elect to avail yourself of my services.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

As a former Art teacher, I have experience with the teaching of drawing. It is a positive factor in a student's self concept and drawing well can contribute to a better self image; especially for students who may be struggling in other subjects. This positive image can encourage more effort in other subjects if successfully mastered in the art realm.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have eight years' experience as a pubic school Art teacher for grades K-12. Currently, I am a substitute teacher in the Ayer/Shirley Regional School District for grades K-12 and am substituting in all subject matters. Reading and writing for comprehension is important for learning in all subject matters. Advancing in these basic skills will allow for better success in all other subjects.

Geography

I have a good knowledge of geography and map reading.

Painting

Painting can be a good way to encourage creative thinking. As opposed to drawing, which can be very precise, painting requires the participant to be more interactive to possibilities while working. Outlines become less important as color and contrast gain prominence. Being open to surprises is useful. This utilizes the creative side of the brain, whereas mathematics uses the other part of the brain. I have eight years' experience as a pubic school Art teacher for grades K-12.

SAT Writing

Writing has always been a strength of mine. I worked in the Publishing field for many years and performed proofreading and editing. Also, I helped self-publishers prepare manuscripts for printing. I am currently a Substitute Teacher in the Ayer/Shirley Regional School District. I work with all age groups and abilities and get along well with the students.

Study Skills

I have had good results in my life through good study habits. I would be happy to work with others to impart the necessity and the rewards associated with habits that maximize effort. Students learn in different modes, and I am prepared to work with students in the modes that most help them learn easily. I have eight years' experience as a pubic school Art teacher for grades K-12. Currently, I am a substitute teacher in the Ayer/Shirley Regional School District for grades K-12.

Swimming

I have been a lifeguard and taught swimming and lifesaving at Adams Pond Scout Camp in Barnstable, New Hampshire. I was the Waterfront Director at Camp Becket in the Berkshires and obtained my Water Safety Instructor Certificate at Springfield College. I swim well and can teach others to do the same.

Track & Field

I have been a runner my whole life. In Middle School, High School, and College; I competed in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track. As a teacher, I coached Middle School Cross Country and High School Track and Field. As a competitor, I was successful in Race-walk events; finishing in top ten Nationally several times. I remain active in long distance running and am eager to encourage others to do so as well.
