I am a recently retired school teacher after working 32 years in the Boston Public Schools. I worked as a Resource Room teacher servicing children in grades 1 to 5. I mainly worked with small groups of children both inside and out side the classroom. Literacy is my specialty, but I have taught math and supported science and social studies with students who required these services. I have lots of experience supporting children in grades 3 through 5 with MCAS preparation.

Additionally, I am a certified Wilson Reading Instructor. This is a linguistic based program to help children who struggle with reading due to dyslexia or some other type of learning disability. I am also certified in Project Read and Wisnea Kapp. These are both phonetic based programs to help children with decoding skills. In 2008 I became certified as a Reading Recovery Teacher and taught 3 first graders after school in Reading Recovery.

I have learned a lot over the years not just in college classes and workshops, but mainly working with children. I would like to continue servicing children and watching them grow and become successful in their academic experiences.

As a special needs teacher in the Boston Public schools, I worked with many students who were diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. I have developed I.E.P.s for students with this type of disability. Also, I have developed and used many types of behavior management programs, which helped children with ADD to become more focused and organized.

This program is specifically targeted for children with dyslexia. I am also a certified Reading Recovery teacher, Project Read Instructor and Wisnea Kapp instructor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught in Boston as a Resource Room teacher for over 30 years. I worked with children in grades 1-5 and I am completely familiar with the elementary school curriculum and state based standards. I serviced both regular education children and special needs children. I have been doing MCAS prep with students in grades 3-5 since this testing began in Massachusetts.

Elementary Math

I taught math to elementary school children for over 30 years. I am quite familiar with the standards that are required for taking and performing well on the MCAS. As a Resource Room teacher for the Boston Public schools, I have lots of experience using the Math Investigations program, also known as TERC. My experience also includes tutoring in an after school program known as SES. This program was a supplemental program to help boost students' math MCAS scores.

English

I taught writing to children in grades 1-5 for over 30 years as a Resource Room teacher in the Boston Public Schools. A strong focus of my work was with 4th graders who needed extra practice in order to prepare them for the 5 paragraph MCAS essay, which all public school 4th graders are required to take. Most of my students had I.E.P goals and objectives to improve writing skills.

ESL/ESOL

While working in the Boston Public Schools, I completed Categories 1,2, 3, and 4 of ESL training. Most of the students I worked with were second language learners and this was a requirement.

As a Resource room teacher at the middle school level, I supported students with study skills. Many students with attention deficits need support with organizational skills and study skills. Their I.E.P. will often have goals and objectives addressing this need.

Writing

I have taught writing to 4th and 5th graders for many years in the Boston Public schools. I am completely familiar with the 5 step writing process which is used by 5th graders. Working as a Resource room teacher, writing was a skill that I focused on for most of my upper elementary grade students.
