I am a versatile well-qualified tutor with many years experience as a project manager
a technical writer, an ESL tutor, and a teacher of elementary students. My qualifications include:
o Certification as Teacher of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) from the Boston Language Institute
o Experience teaching and tutoring all levels of ESL, including discussion skills for advanced students
o Many years working as a Technical writer and Manager of technical publications projects, and technical writers and editors
o Experience as a hiring manager with insight to help clients improve resumes and cover letters
o BA in Education from Moray House College in Edinburgh, Scotland.
o Seven years as an elementary teacher in public schools in both the UK and the US, specializing in beginning reading skills and the social studies.

We will meet first to explore what you want to learn about and the skills you want to improve, as well as to consider a plan for your success. There will not be a charge for this introductory meeting.

Although I think students know best what pace and difficulty they are comfortable with, I do encourage students to maintain a pace that lets them see progress quickly. This usually includes homework. My goal is for my clients to gain confidence about their ability to converse well in English socially and professionally or, in the case of young students, to enjoy the benefits of learning new skills and knowledge.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I was raised in the UK but have lived in the US for some thirty years. I used to joke that I am bilingual as I can translate American English to British English and vice versa. There are some differences between the two in style, as well as spelling and terminology. Having lived here in the US for so long, I consider myself an American but still go "home" to visit family in the UK.

ESL/ESOL

I especially enjoy teaching English to help non-native adults lead fuller lives here in the Boston area.

Proofreading

I worked as a manager, writer, and editor in IT companies for many years. As a manager, I proofread many writers' and editors' work and also proofread documents for final production. I specialize in proofreading and copy editing technical documents.

TOEFL

The TOEFL test is extremely difficult. Many people fail the test the first time they take it, and many also fail the second time. Apart from being able to read, write, listen and speak English at a high level, students have to be ready and able to work at the university level and be critical thinkers.
