My name is Kim, I have taught special needs students with a variety of disabilities for over 24 years. I specialize in reading and ELA. It's important that learning be an enjoyable process, and my approach is individualized to meet the students personality and learning style.
I am certified in Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Project READ, and the Linda Mood Bell reading programs. I am also certified in the EmPOWER writing program. I take a multisensory approach to leaning. This involves movement brakes, and using sensory tools such as hand fidgets, mouth tools,(candy or gum to help keep students alert and focused), and Brain Gym, which are specific movements that help both sides of the brain work together with more automoticity.
I enjoy working with kids of all ages and am still in touch with many parents and students I have worked with long after they have graduated.
I worked with students with ADD/ADHD. I used many sensory tools and breaks and incentive plans to help the student focus. I use Brain Gym, this is a therapeutic method develop end to help students focus through movement. I also help students develop strategies to monitor their own off task behavior. Many add/adha student are very bright and its important to help them tap into their strengths.its important to review before going on to new information. Its helpful to help them make connections from the known to the new information.
I worked with high functioning Autism. We used ABA and created a behavior program to increase positive behaviors and decrease negative ones.
I have a BA in Elementary Ed k-8 from Curry College and have taught students of this age for the past 26 years.
I hold a certificate in Moderate Special Needs from Curry College, and worked as a special needs teacher for the last 25 years.
