I've been in love with language since I was twelve. Although I've studied several languages over the years, I'm most familiar with German and Latin. I started studying German in 7th grade and continued on through college, where I also picked up Latin, and received a B.A. summa cum laude in both Classics and Modern Languages. I then began a Ph.D. program in Linguistics--the science of language-- where I've done a major research project on Latin.
My other academic passion is teaching. In college, I tutored fellow classmates and a high school student in Latin. In graduate school, I've had the pleasure of three years' experience as a teaching assistant and instructor in linguistics. I believe a teacher's job is to help each student find his or her own way to an understanding of the material, rather than force-feeding facts to be memorized. In language learning, this means discovering the internal logic by which a language operates, supplemented by lots of practice and memorization. Thus, challenging homework assignments and periodic assessments are a key component of my tutoring.
I am available to tutor beginner-level through intermediate German and Latin. I am able to teach online, or to travel to a location convenient to the student.
I'm looking forward to working with you!
