Hi! I'm Erika - a photographer since 1999 and a graphic artist since 2001. My start in photography came from the US Air Force, where I provided photographic support for the 74th Med Group. I've been published online and in print, I've photographed weddings, sporting event, political rallies, models and works of fine art... I've traveled the globe with my camera and it's been a great trip so far. And, I've taught photography for two years at an arts center near Washington, DC.
My arts background is extensive - I've been in fine arts for as long as I can remember - my mother is a PhD in Art History and a Bachelor in Fine Art so I've had a pencil in my hand for as long as I can remember. I use my training in fine art composition to influence my photography and also my teaching style. Photography is Painting with Light (as my first photography instructor said on our first day) and I've never forgotten that. To me, this is an art and so we learn as artists always have, with hands-on study and a knowledge of the masters in our craft.
What I bring to my students is not only an understanding of their camera, but also of the history of photography. They will learn color and composition, what makes an exposure and what the rules governing this art form are, how to use them and how to break them when necessary. Part of the classes will be indoors, learning from engaging PowerPoint presentations. Most of the classes will be outside - there is no substitute for practical application! I will help them every step of the way - from camera basics to computer usage to editing for printed final product. Students don't have to know Photoshop - I can teach them that too! My photography class will give them a little exposure to Photoshop basic usage. I can also teach more experienced photographers how to get more out of Photoshop.
I am knowledgeable about Photoshop - both on Mac and PC - and can teach advanced techniques in Photoshop, taking things out of the realm of photo editing and into photo manipulation and compilation. My degree is a dual Bachelor's, Cum Laude, in Photography and Media Design.
All my students come away with a sound knowledge of photography and a plethora of images to decorate the walls!
Honestly, I love photography and I want my students to love it as well. My goal is to teach and inspire you to be the best photographer you can be.
