Hello! I'm glad you are interested in learning German. Please let me tell you about my background in this fascinating subject and I how I can help. I grew up just north of Boston and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where I double-majored in German literature and psychology. Later I graduated with an M.A. from the noted department of Modern German Literature at the University of Munich with minors in Germanic linguistics and psychology. I maintain an academic reading knowledge of Dutch and Norwegian, which I learned while studying in Germany.
I am a German language instructor at the Goethe-Institut in Boston. There I teach scholarly reading courses for graduate students and give upper-level adult language courses and private lessons. In addition, I teach 10th grade at the German Saturday School Boston where German is the language of instruction. I speak German daily with native German colleagues and friends, and I am fluent in the language.
As a native-born American, I am familiar with the early struggles of learning German grammar. Whatever your current level or interest, I can help you study German, improve your grammar skills, and assist you in achieving higher grades. I will work closely with any school or college text you are using and help with homework assignments assigned by your teachers or professors. My first contact with German began as an undergraduate needing to complete my foreign language requirement. Since then, studying Germanic languages and literature has become an ongoing personal interest that continues to this day. Having mastered German to a level of near-native fluency, I am now able to help interested students learn German by teaching anything from basic written and verbal communication skills to writing academic essays or discussing major figures and periods.
I have studied 19th century German thought through the writings of Feuerbach, Freud, Marx, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer, as well as authors of modern and more contemporary philosophical movements. My interest in German literature includes works by 19th and 20th century German and Swiss authors, such as Brecht, Dürrenmatt, Frisch, Gotthelf, Hesse, Kafka, Mann, and Wedekind. While studying in Munich, I focused primarily on literature and Media Studies of the 20th and 21st centuries, with interest in German film history, literary theory, gender studies, linguistics, hermeneutics, and constructivism.
As an undergraduate, I majored in psychology and studied emotion and motivation; sensation and perception; neurobiology; child and adolescent development; and personality. I offer tutoring to high school and college students in these and related areas.
At the University of Munich in Germany I took courses in psychology and neuroscience with special interest in states of consciousness, attention, and perception. More specifically, I focused on the neurobiology of vision and hearing, and investigated limits to human perception.
Since my return to the U.S., I graduated from the Masters program in Mental Health Counseling at Salem State University with a 3.9 GPA. At Salem I took courses in clinical pathology, substance abuse, human sexuality, intimate relationships, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and group therapy, among others. "Differential Diagnosis," a course required in most graduate clinical psychology departments, is notoriously difficult and can be a challenge for many students. Having passed this course with an A, I went on to complete over 800 internship hours working as a counselor in a mental health center. If you are taking this course, I can help you work efficiently with the DSM-IV, become confident with the material, and do well on your exams. I offer tutoring for this and other graduate psychology courses as well.
