I'm Shelly, a mother of two teenage boys who have had their share of educational discouragement. They are my best references! :-D I'm currently employed (since 2008, working with adults with developmental disabilities.

Currently working on a Masters Degree and licensure in Marriage and Family Therapy/Mental Health Counseling. If your child is (or you are) feeling defeated or anxious around school or learning issues, my skills, sensitivity, and humor can help instill confidence that leads to success.

As a Certified Teacher, my experience includes autism and other developmental challenges, as well as mainstream classroom teaching, homeschooling, and adult discussion groups.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received my Massachusetts Elementary Teaching certificate many years ago, and have enjoyed working with children ever since. Learning should be fun - it sticks better that way.

General Computer

I have been working with computers for 25 years, and have seen them come a long way. My household has more computers in it than people - we are all geeks, what can I say? I would enjoy helping you learn how to use your computer, from turning it on and off safely to adding new hardware and software to learning how to use your software... no question is a silly one, just ask.

Bible Studies

I have been a student of the Bible for about 45 years - that's pretty much my whole life. I have taught Sunday school, and led adult studies. I home schooled my son for 2 years and Bible was part of our curriculum. I love studying the Bible and learning how to apply its principles.

Drawing

My teenage son and I share a talent for drawing and sometimes spend time drawing together. As a child, my younger brothers used to ask for drawing lessons, and I would happily oblige. I still have several of our drawings! I have a website with some of my current computer generated work on it; my son has his on several sites.

Cooking

My mother and father started teaching me to cook when I was a child, and I have been doing it ever since. I currently work in a setting where I have to prepare delicious, well-balanced, low fat, low sugar meals. I get rave reviews! I have supervised people baking yummy treats, and would enjoy passing on my skills to you.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified elementary school teacher with several family members with ADD/ADHD. I currently work with developmentally disabled adults, some of whom have ADD/ADHD. I think I may have it myself! I understand, and I know how to help you focus.

Autism

Although my certification is for mainstream classrooms, I have spent many hours working in autism classrooms. I enjoy the challenge of learning to communicate and establish a rapport with these special people. I am familiar with applied behavioral analysis and with recording data for behavioral and academic goals.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook daily for many years and have learned most of the ins and outs. I like having email from all of my addresses directed to one convenient place on my own computer - that way I don't have silly ads taking up all my bandwidth and slowing me down, like I would if I went on the web to get my mail. You may also be interested in the web based version, which my employer uses for remote email access by employees.

Reading

Each student has his or her own way to best learn to read and/or improve reading skills depending on age, skill level, special needs, etc. One secret I've found is to meet the student where they are. Find topics they love. Use teaching styles they are comfortable with. Be flexible. Really tune in to the student and find out what gets them motivated.
