As a professional teacher with certification in both mathematics and moderate disabilities, I have taught all levels of mathematics from first grade through pre-calculus and trigonometry. I am extremely successful in helping students overcome math anxiety and truly believe that anyone can succeed in understanding mathematics. I have 18+ years of experience in both teaching and tutoring students of all abilities, including the gifted.
As a teacher and tutor I have been successful in overcoming the obstacles that interfere with a student’s ability to learn mathematics due to my understanding of what each grade level needs to learn, why they need to know it and where their mathematical experience is headed as they progress through school. I teach for understanding not rote memorization.
My ability to break down a mathematical concept and to explain it in clear, concise, non-threatening ways while having fun with my students promotes success and a love of mathematics. After assessing a student’s knowledge, I will utilize a scaffolding method to design lessons built upon their current knowledge that will correct any misconceptions and allow each a successful outcome. I use real life examples to help my students integrate each concept.
I have13 years experience teaching students with high functioning autism (HFA), Asperger’s (AS) and nonverbal learning disorders (NVLD). Although many of these students experience extreme anxiety and difficulty learning mathematics, all of my students have completely overcome their fear of mathematics and passed their MCAS. My older students have also passed the college level Accuplacer mathematics entrance exam.
I have also taught elementary, middle school and high school science, including biology, chemistry, environmental science and physics. I am currently working with teachers to help improve their ability to teach mathematics to their students.
