I have been a middle school math teacher for 25 years in both public and private school settings and I have been a math tutor- resource person in both a middle and high school setting. I have taught math in all grade levels from 6th grade math through Honors Algebra I. I hold Massachusetts teacher certification for Middle School Math. I did graduate work in Math Education at the University of Maryland before moving and I later received a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction with Technology from Lesley College.
My classroom experience transitions from traditional Algebra I using the Dolciani Algebra text to the more investigative Key Press Algebra I, and investigative approach. Similarly I have taught 6th grade math with traditional curricula such as Addison Wesley as well as the more hands on investigative Everyday Math and CMP.
I continually seek professional development opportunities and I have attended numerous math conferences including training in the Connected Math Program (CMP) At Michigan State where it was developed, as well as The Key Press program on Investigative Algebra I in California. I have attended the Anja Greer Conference at Philips Exeter Academy on Math Science and Technology.
When I tutor I work hard to make the math lessons more meaningful to the experiences of the student and when possible I use manipulative to explain new concepts. I am patient and understanding of my students and I expect them to work hard throughout the work session. I find it helpful to be able to communicate with the classroom teacher but do not require to do so.
