My name is Christina G. and I recently graduated from Smith College in Northampton, MA. I have a bachelors degree in Environmental Science and Policy with a minor in Marine Science and Policy. I am a big proponent of hands on learning. I have been lucky enough to travel around the world and experience different cultures and environments learning about them with a hands on approach. In tutoring I would encourage students to take activities that they enjoy and apply it to the subject during the tutoring sessions. Classroom work/learning does not always work; instead you have to engage the student and capture the students’ attention. Learning must be fun, as well as educational and that is my main goal as a tutor.
I spent a summer working at a Girl Scout camp in science programs with children from the age of 7 to the age of 17. An example of one lesson that I taught was an oil spill activity. My goal was to show the campers just how hard it was to clean up an oil spill as well as the long term affects to the environment. I set up the oil spill in an aluminum container and mimicked methods of clean up that companies use to try and clean up the oil. They learned through their frustrations of trying to clean up their oil, so because they had a personal investment in the idea, the lessons stayed with them longer.
