ADD/ADHD

I am certified as a teacher in Moderate Special Needs, Elementary, and Middle School. I have been tutoring students with ADD and ADHD for at least 12 years, and working with students with a wide range of disabilities in the public school for over 15 years in grades 3-12.

I offer students an in-depth look at the biological underpinnings of attention deficit disorder, and how that biology, together with the environment, works to both help and hinder the ADHD individual. Specific focus is given to why ADDers behave the way they do, and why certain interventions may work, or not work. Students will learn how the special characteristics of the ADD personality can be used to promote learning.

American History

As the lead teacher of a of a .4 special education classroom in the public school, I have been teaching American History to students with disabilities at both the elementary and middle school levels for over 10 years.

Aspergers

I have been tutoring students with Asperger's for at least 12 years, and working with students with Asperger's and Autistic Spectrum in the public school for over 15 years in grades 3-12. I have also been a camp director at the Bridge Center in Bridgewater MA for the last two years. I also give workshops on "Understand Asperger's Syndrome" where I teach parents, educators and child care providers to understand the behavior behind the phenomenal of ‘mind blindness’, which is the chief deficit of individuals with ASD and Asperger's Syndrome. In these presentations I give a detailed over view of the multifaceted biology that composes this disorder as well as clear explanations of proven interventions and why they work with individual on this continuum, plus, positive affirmation of the value and gifts these learners bring to the world and education.

Autism

I am a certified special education teacher who has designed, developed and run substantial separate classrooms in the public schools for students who suffer from impairments, like Autistic Spectrum Disorder, that interfere with thier behavioral and emotional function, for the last ten years in both the elementary and middle school. I have been tutoring students with ALS for at least 12 years, and working with students with Asperger's and Autistic Spectrum in the public school for over 15 years in grades 3-12.

I was certified by in Wilson Reading by Gail Jussaume in 2010. I was certified in Project Read Phonology through Endicott College and the Franklin Public School district in 2005.

Study Skills

As a special education teacher, I have worked for many years with students from elementary to high school to develop individualized study strategies. I utilize a technique called meta-cognitive problem solving that helps students to identify their own personal strengths and weaknesses, and then purposefully directs them to learn and develop study strategies based on their unique profile. Through tutoring, students become accustomed to setting, planning, executing and achieving goals.

Writing

I am certified in Wilson Reading and trained in several reading programs such as Three Keys to Literacy, Collins Writing and Writers Workshop. I have extensive experience teaching student's with disabilities how to write to pass the MCAS.
