Reading and writing are all about thinking clearly. And that is what I am trained to help you do. I hold a Master's Degree in Reading Education, served as a reading specialist in DeKalb County Schools for 7 years, and practiced as a writing specialist for over 20 years in the same school system. I am also a many times published writer.

For 7 years I taught at the innovative and successful DeKalb County Writing Center in Atlanta, Georgia. All teachers at the center had extensive training in the Bay Area Writing Project Writing Process. In 2007, I took additional training with Amherst Artists and Writers in Amherst, MA.

I have had over 300 articles published in publications such as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Magazine, Port City Life Magazine, Times Record Newspaper, Complete Woman, Woman's World, Creative Loafing, Living with Children, the San Antonio Woman and many others. One of the articles won first place in magazines from the International Reading Association.

It is my greatest joy in life to assist others in realizing their ability to read and write. I know that I am good at this because I believe that all of us have the ability to become readers and writers. Some of us just don't know it yet.

Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Reading Education. There are many ways to learn to read. A great many people learn to read by following along as their parents read books to them. People who learn this way are using the sight and sound method. Other people learn to read by mastering the Dolch Sight Word List and then using these words as they read. Others use the phonics method. Ideally, learning to read should use both methods. There are, however, some people who cannot learn to read this way. They need to learn using the kinesthetic/auditory method where they trace words in sand, listen as the teacher says the word, then say the word themselves.

In learning to read it is very important for a student to be surrounded by a print-rich environment. There should be books and magazines in the home. Too much television can sometimes be detrimental. But on the other hand, some television shows actually help with reading. Watching Elmo, for example, is one way to learn sounds and words.

Writing

I'm a many-times-published journalist who has specialized in teaching writing. It was my job in DeKalb County Schools to help students pass writing tests. I have a Master's Degree in Education. I've been certified as a writing instructor by Amherst Artists and Writers.
