I am a certified and experienced Teacher and Guidance Counselor with pending certification as a District-wide Director of Guidance. I continually attend workshops conducted by The College Board and other professional organizations to maintain knowledge of current standards and available programs. Recent participation includes the College Board's Fall Counselor Workshop, The College Board's Advanced Placement Coordinators Workshop, and monthly meetings of South Shore Guidance Association and Greater Boston School Counselors Association. I constantly attend presentations by admissions counselors about their colleges, universities, and technical programs.
My focus in working with students who wish to increase achievement on college entrance examinations includes familiarity with testing procedure and style to reduce anxiety, increased vocabulary and reasoning skills for working out unfamiliar terminology, and general confidence-building exercises through practice testing and test-taking strategies. I highly recommend that students enroll in and use the College Board’s Question of the Day program, and other such tools that cost nothing beyond a few minutes to utilize them daily. Habits such as this can help students increase their test scores, and I can offer the encouragement that may be necessary for students to develop or strengthen these highly effective habits.
I am also well versed in the college application and financial aid application process. I can assist students in any grade with the process of determining colleges of interest for their potential career choices, and recommend appropriate course preparation for maximum likelihood to gain entrance to colleges of choice. There are benefits for students in any grade to begin this process in age-appropriate ways, and early planning can be especially advantageous for students pursuing some specialized careers, such as medicine. I can also assist students in finding appropriate pursuits when they are unclear about the specific direction of their careers.
My recent post-graduate coursework and my educational philosophy include formulation of ways to optimize success and achievement levels of all students, specializing in increasing that of underperforming or underachieving students.
I have teaching and curriculum development experience within regular subject matter and Guidance Seminars, covering such topics as study skills, adjustment to a new school situation, and other tools toward productive citizenship for all students.
