I possess a wealth of experience both teaching and developing challenging, INTERESTING curriculum for ELA and Social Sciences. Courses taught at the high school level include: Reading, AP Literature, AP US History, Honors World History, and Honors English 9-10.
I also taught a specialized academic elective geared towards developing college-going cognitive and learning skills, culminating with SAT/ACT preparation and THE DREADED COLLEGE ESSAY. One area of particular expertise I possess is transforming a "run of the mill" college entrance essay into a dynamic, page-turning narrative.
I found the key was to make the writing and reading content relevant and interesting for my students. Too often, the student of 2013 confronts challenging material and cannot connect it to our contemporary world or their life. By first drawing out those connections, we can delve into the types of critical thinking, writing and analysis that characterize the successful college-going student. I was always a vocal proponent of students developing their own voices and getting out of their seats! Simulations and academic games challenging students to think, debate, write about it, and write some more, were commonplace. This is not our grandparents' classroom anymore.
While I was a certified teacher in Florida, I now work in the business world in Burlington and live in North Chelmsford with my partner and newborn daughter.
I also bring a coach's mindset to the tutoring dynamic. My job is not to spoon feed answers; rather, I engage active discussion utilizing Socratic methodology. I am results oriented, and will push you to accept nothing less than what you are capable of, no matter your current level.
My rates are flexible, contingent upon student need, content area, location, and financial circumstance. I am available for 1-2 weeknight sessions and 1 weekend session--and always flexible to meet the demands of your schedule.
