I taught Algebra, Geometry, Latin, and English composition and literature for 5 years at a unique Catholic prep school which used the Socratic method of teaching. The philosophy was to have students discover as much as possible on their own. Rather than lecture, my job was to always keep it interesting, to ask questions that would spur discussion, and of course to show them when necessary. I found that not only is it far more enjoyable for the students, but that they tend to remember better what they discover.
I have also worked at a private tutoring company for 7 years, teaching grades 4-12 math, English, and SAT prep. I find Barron's SAT preparation book the best.
Recently I helped college students with their essays as an Ancient Greek History teaching assistant at Brandeis University. There I received my MA in Greek and Roman Studies with a concentration in Latin.
I also have experience teaching at the college level. I served as a substitute professor of Philosophy at Clark University.
Passionate about education to the core, while working at a large hedge fund, I was a founder and board member of the Lyceum School in Cleveland, OH. There I scouted for students, outlined the curriculum, and recruited teachers to our new school. I also started a book club for the parents of students, to acquaint them with our Socratic method of learning.
I've studied the Bible in both Latin and Greek in graduate school at Brandeis. I had 8 semesters of years of Theology in undergrad, reading the whole bible freshman year, and studying Augustine and Aquinas for three years afterwards. Further, I taught Old Testament at Trivium School in Lancaster, MA.
Making learning fun is essential for all teaching, but especially in grade school as it may set the tone for the rest of a student's entire education. That's a talent of mine. The oldest of six children, I've been caring for and teaching young people since childhood. I have worked for a private tutoring company with children in grades 3-6 for 7 years.
I have taught English composition to grades 8,9, and 10 and taught Latin I&II. All of these courses had a strong grammar component. Grammar is essential for studying inflected languages like Greek and Latin, in which noun and adjective forms change depending on their function in the sentence.
I am a former substitute philosophy professor at Clark University. Ancient philosophy is my forte, especially Aristotle.
I taught 8th grade American Government at Trivium School. I did my senior thesis on Political Rhetoric. In the Great Books program at Thomas Aquinas College I read all the major political works like Machiavelli's Prince, Aristotle's Politics, Aquinas' On Kingship, Plato's Republic, De Toqueville's Democracy in America, The Federalist Papers, Hobbes' Leviathon, Locke's Second Treatise on government, and Thucydides' Peloponnesean War. I also have practical experience in politics as I've been paid staff for four campaigns. I follow political news like some guys follow sports news.
Excellent tutor — Eric is an excellent tutor. My son was not at all interested in math. It was hard and frustrating, and his problems with math were affecting his overall view of school. After his first lesson with Eric, I began to see a rapid improvement in his whole outlook towards school. I don't know exactly what Eric did, but after he had left that day, my son kept telling me about some mathematical concept th ...
