Starting out, I was an English grammar and writing guru. Then I become a French language guru. Simply put, I am passionate about the workings of language itself and seek to communicate my educated interest in language through teaching and tutoring.
I became a trained writing tutor at Colby College, where I coached students in any subject at any stage of writing. Before becoming a tutor, I completed a Tutoring Writing class. My tutoring sessions varied from one-time meetings with students struggling with an assignment to regular meetings with the same student over the duration of the school year.
I graduated from Colby College with the highest GPA in the English major. Post-graduation, my professional positions have incorporated editing and coaching writing in several contexts, such as working with marketing copy and preparing conference descriptions with colleagues.
I was awarded a DALF diploma, which comes from the French Ministry of Education and certifies that I speak French at the advanced level. I studied French formally for 8 years in school, and have also maintained my French in several settings such as volunteering at the French Cultural Center and interning at the French American Chamber of Commerce. Most importantly, in the 2011 – 2012 school year, I lived in the Lorraine region of France and taught English to students in 1st to 5th grade. In addition to strengthening my French, I gained valuable tutoring skills such as preparing and implementing language lessons for students at various levels.
My interest in French is cultural as well as linguistic. Therefore I am flexible about the area in which you’d like to focus, whether it is listening and speaking, reading and writing, or simply learning more about francophone culture. After living in France I am aware of popular culture such as movies, expressions, and cultural differences that I am able to incorporate in my lessons. On the other side of the spectrum, I have learned the appropriate contexts for writing such as preparing a formal letter.
I am enthusiastic and knowledgeable, so based on your relationship with the subject, I aim to make the tutoring session productive and enjoyable.
