I’m an experienced English
tutor with a specialty in English as a Second Language
. I earned a Certificate of Training from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Literacy Corps for tutoring ESOL
, English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL is also known as ESL
, English as a Second Language
I’ve helped a wide variety of people whose first language is not English. I’m patient, I have a knack for understanding their English, and I’m adept at helping them to improve their communication skills, with an emphasis on conversation, especially pronunciation and enunciation.
My teaching style is relaxed and informal; it is akin to personal coaching. With compassion and humor, I put my learners at ease, especially those who may feel embarrassed about their language skills. I customize the content and pace of my tutoring sessions to accommodate each student’s particular needs.
I have experience as a technical writer, sales and marketing
programmer, software engineer, and research chemist. I’ve worked in customer service and I’m comfortable communicating with diverse people of various educational, professional, and personal backgrounds. I’ve volunteered as a docent at an art
gallery and have participated in Shakespeare ‘recitation marathons.’
I was educated in England, Canada, and the United States. I earned a doctorate in biological enzyme chemistry
from Brandeis University. I have helped students with their English assignments. Also, I have assisted postdoctoral scientists in editing
manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and I coached them in rehearsing for professional presentations.
I’m an enthusiastic tutor and my tutoring sessions provide more than just English language lessons. Indeed, much of the guidance that I provide to my students assists them in their acclimation to our culture, especially when they encounter American English with its wealth of everyday idioms and slang. As my students begin to empower themselves, they find that they’re able to reduce their daily stress, ‘simply’ by improving their English language skills and by better understanding our American ways.
