English

Spoken, written, poetry, fiction, news-stories, blogging… You name it, I've studied it.

Grammar

One of the foundations of great writing. Logical sentences are easy. Beautiful, clear, creative sentences are much more difficult.

Literature

Where to start? I have a degree in English literature, wrote a thesis on the evolution of post-modernism between Joyce and Faulkner, and have been known to randomly spout Shakespeare in conversation. So yeah, I like books (and plays, poetry, short stories etc.)

Proofreading

I spent a full year as a TA for college English courses, proofreading every word 30 students wrote in that time.

Reading

One of my great joys in the world. Everything from biography to sci-fi, and the whole spectrum in between.

Spelling

I'll admit, spell check dependency hasn't helped my skills here. But good spelling marks the focus and attention to detail that all great writers possess.

Vocabulary

It isn't about using big words. It's about having the right words.

Writing

My favorite method of expression, my passion, and my choice as the great artform in human history.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
