With more than twenty years' experience in a variety of educational settings including classrooms, community schools and individual and group lessons, I’ve honed my skills as a student-centered, experiential teacher of all ages, from pre-school to adult. The subjects I've taught include elementary school humanities, writing and editing for adults, music classes and individual lessons, photography, teacher training, and sustainable landscape methods. I work with each student's personal interests and learning style to develop individualized teaching and, if needed, a specialized curriculum.
I believe that even the most challenging learning can be fun. I encourage students to take ownership of their process. We will work together to design creative activities, achieving learning goals through exploration, reflection and hands-on projects.
Research on motivation and performance shows that we are motivated less by rewards than by an inner sense of autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Autonomy grows out of independent or guided exploration and interactions with a teacher who respects every learner as an intellectually competent, creative, discerning thinker and doer. Mastery develops with practice and patience, solidified by personally meaningful demonstrations of progressively complex accomplishments. Purpose develops when students make interdisciplinary connections and relate learning to their own experiences.
As your tutor, I will honor your unique talents and ways of knowing while helping you reach your goals in whatever way best fits your learning strengths.
