If you are interested in a creative approach to English, language, and writing, then I may be the tutor you are looking for. I am a professional writer experienced in teaching diverse populations. I have worked in college, community college residency, high school, and elementary schools. My background as a journalist for both print and broadcast media, as a poet, and as a documentary producer provides a rich context for my work. I have offered my own "Write for Life" system in diverse formats for varied learning communities. I am an author both of the "Write for Life" workbook and "The Other Side of Where I Used to Live" (poetry and drama). I have professionally edited newsletters, books, and copy.
I am an experienced ESL/literacy tutor for maritime courses, and have developed population-specific educational and creative management techniques for these professionals. I have also worked as a translator/editor of Int'l Ship and Port Security material as well as policy documents for LNG and oil companies. I have tutored Spanish and am fluent in French.
I currently assess argument and opinion essays for the GRE, as well as independent essays and integrated constructed responses of international business and academic candidates for the TOEFL. I also develop items for English Language Acquisition tests.
I also currently direct a nonprofit cultural organization with past award-winning performance, production, and interpretive programs. I have designed and managed pilot educational programs both for this organization and for a community college arena.
I have won awards from the Nat'l Council of Teachers of English, the Mass. Cultural Council, and the United Way for my work.
I hold the following credentials: an M.A. in English: Creative Writing from Brown University, '86; a B.A. in English for University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, '78; an Arts Administration Certificate from Harvard University, '81; Certification in Secondary English, Mass. #338167, '97.
