As a native Chinese speaker with a Massachusetts license for teaching Chinese, I began my bilingual career upon completing my B.A. in English in China. I was fortunate to have worked on many challenging and exciting Chinese-English interpretation and translation assignments as well as opportunities in teaching during my eight-year employment as an in-house translator/interpreter for a Chinese corporation.
I taught English to business professionals in evening classes, tutored Mandarin Chinese to young children and school students in the areas of speaking, calligraphy, radicals, and reading and writing. I tutored English to school students as well as adult learners. As a guest instructor, I also taught an international trade course with the curriculum I developed. Real world scenarios engaged students in case studies and lively discussions, which fostered their critical thinking and problem solving skills. The course, with its practical knowledge and my creative engaging teaching methods, became a must-attend class for annual graduating seniors to prepare them to enter the world of international business.
I discovered my passion for teaching through the wonderful eight-year experience of inspiring my students in the love of learning. I continue to bring my creative spirit and passion for teaching to America.
In the United States, I offer language services of Chinese-English and Fuzhou-English translation, interpretation, and Chinese lessons to domestic and international clients either in person, over the telephone, via e-mail or Skype. As a language instructor, I have taught Chinese at the International Language Institute of Massachusetts and tutored Chinese to students with curriculum tailored to their individual language levels, specific needs, and learning styles. As a guest speaker, I have shared my native language and culture with high school Chinese class students, e.g. Williston Northampton School and Chicopee High School and Chicopee Comprehensive High School through their engagement in lively discussions, hands-on activities, Q and A sessions, and Chinese cooking activities.
According to each student’s age, language ability, and learning objective, I create customized curriculum with individualized teaching methods for each student. Sheltered language, consistent phrasing, constant Chinese, positive reinforcement, role playing, and situation dialogues are but a few methods I utilize. I am excited to help each learner to achieve his/her Chinese language-learning goal while having fun.
My passion for teaching Chinese has prompted me to pursue my second Master's degree, which is an M.A. in Chinese with a Focus on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language summer program at Middlebury College. I am excited to be able to apply what I learn each summer from my degree studies to my teaching.
My M.A. study in International Relations has deepened my conviction of the importance of promoting Chinese language learning. I have a strong desire to facilitate young Americans to master Mandarin Chinese so that they can be more competitive in the global economy. In addition, I am eager to share my language skills, knowledge of international business and Chinese culture with adult Mandarin learners and help them in their communications with Chinese business partners and Chinese people.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Huiping
