I am an independent educator with a career of teaching experience and a lifelong interest in science and mathematics. I also became deeply involved in computers when I saw how they can be used in those fields. I enjoy sharing my love of these topics with others, and that led me to study education methods to be sure I am as effective as possible. I seek to understand my audience as well as possible. As a tutor this means to have a true dialog with the student, to listen carefully to understand how they are understanding the lesson, and to respond using my knowledge of the topic and the learner. Although I am not formally trained in special education, this approach has allowed me to be successful with students in need of individualized approaches.

I have over 20 years experience in various educational settings including private and public schools, museums and nature centers, as well as private math classes and tutoring. I have worked with all age ranges from pre-school through adult. My subject areas include natural sciences such as ecology, earth science, astronomy, and physical science. Mathematics is the language of science and I have studied that deeply over the years. I also am a digital photographer. I belong to several photography groups, including two that have admission by portfolio review, the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists and the Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists.

I look forward to helping you meet your educational goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I studied sciences and I was always a strong math student. In college I pursued mathematics far beyond the basic requirements. I can help with equations, manipulating polynomials and rational expressions, and other aspects of algebra as determined by the curriculum you are in. Using my experience as a teacher, I can be sure to adapt the instruction to benefit the student.

Algebra 2

I have a strong background in mathematics, as it was required in my studies through college, and I have maintained a lifelong interest. I will use this continued interest to bring in real-world examples where possible to help motivate learning. Algebra 2 can be more abstract than algebra 1 and pose new challenges. I can help with quadratic equations and graphs of conic sections, exponential and logarithmic functions, complex numbers, matrices, trigonometry, and whatever else is required by your curriculum. I always use my experience as an educator to observe and listen to the student to be sure the instruction is most effective for them.

Astronomy

I have been teaching about constellations and the night sky for over 30 years and more technical astronomy and astrophysics for about 20 years. I am on the planetarium staff at The Springfield (Massachusetts) Science Museum, which has just received major national accreditation.

My background in teaching is to be as experiential as possible. I seek to make ideas accessible in as simple language as possible, while helping to understand more complex terms. I am always listening to the student and I will adapt to find ways to best meet the student's learning style. I have been successful at presenting complex concepts in ways that are easier for the student.

Biology

Most of my formal education is in biological sciences. I have a degree in Zoology. I can help with all areas of high school biology and many areas of college level biology. I can enrich the instruction with examples from my experiences in marine biological research and field biology. I will use my experience in education to be sure that the instruction is effective.

Calculus

I have a strong background in mathematics. I pursued calculus and other mathematics in college well beyond what was required for my major, and I excelled at all of it. Calculus has many applications in engineering and even in nature. Calculus introduces highly abstract mathematical ways of thinking, while requiring familiarity with algebra and geometry. I am aware of these challenges, and I use my experience as an educator to help students with them. I seek to explain topics in an understandable way and to help the student analyze the topic and identify the core principles.

Chemistry

Principles of Chemistry pose the problems that are solved by living organisms. My studies in Zoology required that I take almost enough courses to double-major in chemistry, and I excelled in all of them. I have a firm foundation in chemistry and I used it extensively in my early career. I can combine this knowledge with my teaching skills to be sure to give the best instruction for each individual student.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught elementary level students over a period of about 10 years as a classroom teacher, and continued after that as a visiting science presenter. I worked in private schools where multidisciplinary approaches were used, integrating writing into math and science classes. In one school I worked with students in small groups on independent study projects, which gave me a lot of experience in working with students as individuals as well as as a class. Combined with my earlier work in experiential and outdoor education, I feel that this gives me a unique set of skills to bring to a student's education.

Elementary Math

I have experience both in teaching at an elementary level and in private tutoring of elementary aged students. Additionally, I have done enrichment classes in math at the elementary level. I know how to teach the topics but at the same time appeal to the interests of the student. Many times in school the more fascinating areas of math are left out. I make sure to include them to help with maintaining interest. I also use various hands-on manipulative tools to help in a multi-mode approach to learning.

In a tutoring situation I am always watching and listening to the student to see how they are relating to the material. I can then use my knowledge of math and of education to devise the best path to success. I look forward to speaking with you to see if I can help meet your educational goals.

Elementary Science

Much of my teaching experience is in science at the elementary level. Additionally, I have done enrichment classes in schools and in private homes. Wherever possible, I use my experience and knowledge to bring in real-world examples to maintain interest. I also use a hands-on experimental approach where appropriate to help understand how we come to know the principles of science.

I always pay attention to the student to see precisely where they have strengths and weaknesses. I then use my knowledge of science and of education to devise the best approach for that student. I look forward to speaking with you to see if I can help meet your educational goals.

General Computer

I have been a Help Desk Technician and then network Administrator for over 10 years. I have supported both Mac and Windows, and I have run Linux as well. I can help you with all aspects of general computing including networks, using office applications, and managing files. I am also an photographer and I can give a lot of help in that area. I can help you with reliable free and low-priced alternatives to commercial software. I emphasize concepts and how they are applied, not just "press that", so you can adapt to new versions and other changes.

Geometry

Geometry is a fascinating branch of mathematics. Unfortunately sometimes the emphasis in school is too much of the formulas and computation. I will use my knowledge of geometry to help the student meet their curricular goals. However, I will use my depth and interest in the field to bring in material that helps to maintain interest. Often the thinking in patterns and finding of patterns in mathematics can carry over to other areas. I have solid experience in teaching and I have tutored many students at the high school level.

In a tutoring situation I am always watching and listening to the student to see how they are relating to the material. I can then use my knowledge of geometry and education to devise the best path to success. I look forward to speaking with you to see if I can help meet your educational goals.

Macintosh

I have supported Macintosh as a Help Desk technician and a network administrator. I am also an experienced teacher, so I can use my knowledge of teaching to teach computing skills to a variety of students. I also supported Windows computers, so if you have switched to OS X from Windows I can help you by relating where you came from to where you are going.

I always emphasize concepts and not just "press here", so the things you learn can continue to be useful as upgrades come out. I show how to use the operating system to locate files so you don't have to rely on a lot of extra utilities. I also show you the existence of free and low-priced alternatives to corporate commercial software.

I have experience in a variety of educational settings, from computer teacher in a school to teaching private clients who are retired. I look forward to meeting you and understanding how I may help you reach your goals.

Organic Chemistry

My major in college required that I take a lot of chemistry. This included organic chemistry and biochemistry. I earned an A grade in all of my chemistry classes. I could have double-majored in chemistry if I took 2 more semesters, but I had other electives I wanted to take. I developed a set of note cards for organic chemistry reactions that was very helpful to me, and I would definitely share this with my students.

Photography

I specialize in nature photography. Beginners in any area of photography can benefit from my knowledge of the basics of photography. In digital processing I can cover the basics of Photoshop and advanced Lightroom. For advanced editing work, I use Picture Window Pro, a powerful program much more affordable than Photoshop. I have supported both Macintosh and Windows professionally and I can help with either platform.

In using the camera or computer, I emphasize concepts and how they are applied. This way, you can take what you learn to any camera or software you may choose in the future.

I am a member of several photography groups, including 2 with admission by portfolio review only, the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists and the Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists. I also teach photography sessions for Mass Audubon. In the past I taught digital photography in College for Kids, a program formerly run by Springfield Technical Community College.

Prealgebra

I have been a teacher for many years, teaching math at both elementary and high school levels. This included teaching pre-algebra and algebra to advanced elementary-aged students. I taught in small settings and always was individualized and student-centered. I am always observing the student and how they are working with the subject. I can choose from a variety of approaches to best help each student. I have a life-long interest in mathematics and often I can include real-world examples to help maintain interest in the lessons.
