Most people don't notice it, but the world we live in is still very much a Greek and Roman world. Those two ancient languages are the best way to begin seeing how much we have inherited from that classical culture. They're hard, it's true; but I can help you do very well and enjoy it too! I'm a former Program Director for Classics at Boston Latin School (1999 to 2011) and I have a great deal of experience teaching at the collegiate level as well. Peter C tutored our son this past semester through a fast paced Latin II course, and with his help, our son raised his grade from B to A. His patient and
expert knowledge along with concrete study strategies was extremely helpful. Mr. C is the best Latin tutor my son has worked with!
Peter understands the subject matter as well as the teaching plans for Latin. He is very helpful and patient. He's just what you need if you are struggling with Latin.
Peter has worked with our teenage daughter for 6 months to accelerate her learning Latin, given her strong interest and limited classroom time and support. She very much enjoyed working with Peter every 7-14 days, and believes her knowledge of grammar and understanding have grown significantly as a result. Peter incorporated innovative ways to learn, using different tools, technologies and approaches to keep things fresh and interesting. The pace of their lessons reflected our daughter's understanding of the materials, at times moving fast and at other times more slowly or returning to reinforce challenging areas. She has loved learning more Latin and feels much more comfortable with the language, both a direct result of the time she spent with Peter.
As a parent, I found Peter easy to work with -- he communicated well, was always on time, prepared and flexible to changes in our schedule, etc. The time he spent with my daughter was productive, and she has a stronger passion around the language now than before working with him, and her level of knowledge has advanced substantially as a result of their lessons. Peter deserves high marks all the way around!
Looks for ways to structure the sessions in a way that works for the student. Very knowledgeable and professional teacher.
Peter worked with my son to assist him with Honors Latin III. Peter was extremely knowledgeable about the texts and the subject matter. He was able to provide my son with tools to break the translation pieces down into manageable "chunks," thereby greatly improving the ease and accuracy of his translation work. Peter also discussed the history and context of the readings, which made them more interesting and relevant. He provided my son with additional study aids to assist with test preparation. As a result of his sessions with Peter, my son's Latin grade and his confidence both improved.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Ph.D. in Classics, which includes mastery of both ancient Greek and Latin. While Latin is much more frequently taught and learned in schools, ancient Greek is not. But interest in ancient Greek is growing, and I am ready to help you with tutoring in this wonderful subject. I have a great deal of experience teaching Greek, both classical prose and archaic/epic poetry. I have taught Herodotus, Xenophon, Attic orators, Aristophanes, Plato, Hesiod, and Homer.
