I am a certified middle school teacher with a M.ed. and 12 years of experience. Children with ADHD face many challenges in the classroom. They get easily distracted and as a result they miss important and valuable learning time. Children with ADHD get easily frustrated, and this can bring social isolation and can also affect them academically. Some of the characteristics of children with ADHD are disorganization, leading to difficulty in the classroom, with schoolwork and with homework.

One of the many things a teacher can do to help these children is to be organized in the way our lesson are taught. Teaching these students is to place them where they can be less distracted in a particular moment. Keeping school materials organized, labeled and by categories diminishes the lack of confidence a student can have towards a lesson being learned.

According to research 60 to 70% of those diagnosed with ADHD will also “display oppositional and defiant behaviors,” so behavior management programs that encourage acceptable behavior and support positive classroom citizenship should be put in place early. (Vaughn, et al. pg 56 (2003).

Teaching Techniques
As mentioned earlier, children with ADHD have different learning styles. They are individuals, and have individual learning styles. It is important to acknowledge these differences and teach with them in mind. Some other techniques that will help are:
· Face forward while instructing, i.e., use an overhead projector instead of a blackboard
· Use cooperative learning groups
· Allow students to doodle, or use a manipulative, if not disturbing others
· Allow alternatives to handwriting
· Activate prior knowledge
· Pre-read questions that will be answered
· Use story mapping and/or graphic organizers
· Use bookmarks during reading to help avoid distractions and losing one’s place.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified middle school teacher with a M.ed. and 12 years of experience in 5, 6, and 7th grade. I have taught reading, writing and social studies. I have also enhanced students’ learning by combining and implementing successful pedagogy strategies; i.e. modeling, cooperative learning, differentiated instruction among others. I am perceptive about students’ needs and addresses them on a regular basis. I strive to identify prerequisite skills, concepts, and vocabulary that students need to know in order to be successful grasping lessons.

The elementary grades are the learning foundation for any student. During the first years of schooling students grasp many skills that they will carry for the rest of their lives. This is why students should have an enormous quality time learning the basics of education which are the following:

1. Learn instructional methods for promoting the development of decoding and encoding skills.
2. Learn the components of reading fluency (e.g., accuracy, automaticity, rate, prosody).
3. Learn characteristics and elements of a variety of literary genres (e.g., realistic fiction, fantasy, poetry, nonfiction).
4. Learn the writing process (e.g., prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing).
5. Learn the characteristics of the modes of writing (e.g., narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, informative, creative).

*This is only a summary of what are some of the components that children must learn during their first years in school.
