I love helping students work with words. Whether it is reading, writing, vocabulary, social studies, or any other subject words, we'll take those letters on! Maybe you are trying to strengthen your skills in your current grade or looking for enrichment--whichever one, we'll have a blast working together using methods and tricks that are full of fun and will help you gain new knowledge and understanding.

I have taught students from the elementary through secondary levels, both in the classroom and one on one. I see the student as an individual and draw on his or her personality, strengths, and learning style, and view learning as a process. While conveying high expectations, I work by forming a partnership with my students and creating a strategy to help them succeed.

I also have extensive experience in SAT and SSAT prep in all areas and would love to work with students preparing for these tests.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught elementary-age students, both in the classroom and as a tutor, for ten years. I have seen my students consistently gain skills and have long-term academic success.

Phonics

A solid foundation in phonics leads to greater success in reading and overall learning. If a student is struggling over letters and sounds, the difficulty of the mechanics of reading detracts from both the enjoyment and comprehension of the material. I love helping students put letters and sounds together and decode words. It can be a lot of fun, as it is like doing puzzles together. I have worked with several students in second and third grade and had the pleasure of watching them become fluent readers.

Social Studies

I have taught social studies for several years and hold a degree in International Relations.

Study Skills

As a teacher and former homeschool mother, I view the development of solid study skills as essential to learning. Without preparation and organization, a student is ineffective even in the best educational setting. I can help a student learn and implement strategies that will maximize success and enjoyment.
