I have taught writing, public speaking and film history/criticism at the college level for more than 25 years. I am also a published author of several books of non-fiction and one novel. My history of FOX Broadcasting won the Cable Center Book Award. My collection of essays on science fiction films was nominated for a Hugo Award.
I am used to guiding students to write and speak clearly and confidently. Being a public speaker and having taught 8 a.m. classes, what I refuse to be is boring. Learning or practicing may be work but it doesn't have to be dull and painful.
As a teacher my goal is to help students to craft essays and presentations that will allow them to use their own words to express themselves. Often it is that lack of confidence (i.e., "I have nothing to say") that is the chief impediment to successful writing. Students who can overcome that can learn the mechanics of constructing an essay or presentation that is well-organized, coherent, grammatically correct, and engaging.
