Hello!

My name is Melissa, and I'm an experienced tutor of English, foreign languages (German, French, and Biblical/Rabbinic Hebrew), and Writing. I was employed for three years by Dartmouth College to teach fellow undergraduates writing, and I have tutored numerous students of all ages in French, German, English, and Hebrew. (I am an American, but I have had experience living abroad in Berlin, Paris, and Jerusalem.)I believe I'm an effective teacher of language partly because of the degree to which it excites me; my passion for the subject is contagious. I worked for over a year in the Boston area as an educational consultant, and in this capacity I taught classes on college admissions to visiting Chinese students; most recently, I was employed as a teacher of German language for high school credit at the Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. This fall I am beginning a masters program in religion at Harvard Divinity School, so I would also be able to tutor in religion-related areas.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have studied Biblical texts for two years at the Pardes Institute for Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, and I am currently a student in a masters program in religion at the Harvard Divinity School.

French

I took multiple French literature classes in college and studied abroad in Paris; I have experience tutoring French through AP French 5 at the high school level.

German

I was a German major at Dartmouth, and have been a teacher of German for high school credit at the Concordia Languages Villages (a summer immersion program in Minnesota at which students earn high school credit)

Grammar

My grammar skills have been honed by my study of multiple foreign languages: French, German, Spanish, Hebrew, Latin, and Sanskrit. I was also hired to instruct fellow students in writing and grammar at the Center for Research, Writing, and Information Technology at Dartmouth.

Hebrew

I have studied Biblical and Rabbinic Hebrew for two years in Israel at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. I am competent to tutor beginner to intermediate Biblical Hebrew (including Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring).

Literature

I was a German literature major as an undergraduate at Dartmouth, and have taken additional classes on literature in my Masters program at Harvard. I plan to teach literature to high school students after graduating my masters program. I am passionate about the potential in literature to make us wiser and more empathetic people.

Proofreading

I received my undergraduate degree in (German) literature at Dartmouth and will soon receive my Masters in Religion at Harvard. As a result, I have had to write and edit many papers throughout my academic career; I have learned to be a careful and exact editor. Additionally, I was hired by Dartmouth while an undergraduate to teach writing and editing skills to fellow students.

Spanish

I tutored a friend in a Harvard Spanish test that she had failed 4 times. She needed to pass the test to graduate. As a result of our tutoring sessions, she passed the test, so now she will graduate!

Writing

I worked during all years that I was eligible (3 years) at the Center for Research, Writing, and Information Technology while I was a student at Dartmouth. My job while there was to teach writing and give students feedback on papers and presentations.
