I love math, but if you don't, I understand! I can make it less scary for you. I have taught or tutored everything from basic arithmetic to upper-division engineering math, as well as statistics. I have helped hundreds of people by listening to them, understanding their approach to math, and then showing them where to make adjustments. I do best with college-age and adult learners, but I have also tutored high school students.

My specialties are statistics, calculus, and applied math for engineering including differential equations, stochastic processes, and linear algebra. My credentials: I have a Bachelor's in Math, Master's in a sort of applied math, and Doctorate in engineering math by way of Electrical Engineering (at the University of California at Santa Barbara). I have logged over 2500 hours' time in one-on-one tutoring through Pearson Tutor Services.

Before working with Pearson, I spent seven years working as an aerospace engineer, where I worked on navigational software for a large Air Force transport plane and did a little research on space navigation. I have over eight years' experience in the classroom at both the university level (Washington U in St. Louis, U.C. Santa Barbara, Wentworth Institute of Technology) and the community college level (Santa Barbara City College, North Shore Community College at Lynn, MA). I had several clients for one-on-one tutoring in the home, at libraries, or at schools in Santa Barbara, CA, where I helped with GED math, college prep math, and college statistics.

I'd love to hear from you ... early on in your math or stats course, rather than later!

Joan’s subjects

Algebra 1

An excellent listener who will personalize your tutoring session to your needs. With over twenty years' experience in teaching math, I can give clear and simple explanations to even the most complex problems.

Algebra 2

I have experience in using Algebra 2 concepts in real life, as well as extensive experience in teaching Algebra 2 (among other math subjects). I can explain functions and graphing. I am comfortable explaining trigonometry using either a right-triangle or a unit-circle approach.

My Ph.D. dissertation involved a lot of matrix algebra, so I can easily explain anything that has to do with matrices or determinants.

I am also proficient in using Texas Instruments graphing calculators, and can help you learn to use the calculator (if needed) as well as to solve problems using the calculator.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Calculus

Do you need a Math Whisperer? Then call me. Whatever level of understanding you have, I will meet you there and we will go forward together. With over a decade's experience teaching higher mathematics, I can give simple explanations to even the most complicated subjects.

Differential Equations

I have professional experience in using systems of linear first-order differential and differential equations in aerospace engineering. I have also taught introductory courses in first-order systems for engineers, and advanced calculus for engineers (which includes elementary partial differential equations, Fourier series, and Laplace transform methods for solving linear ODE's).

My Ph.D. dissertation at the University of California at Santa Barbara was concerned with matrix methods for higher-order linear differential equations.

For the past eight years, I have worked for Pearson Higher Education as a math tutor, helping students with basic linear ODE's and with phase-plane analysis.

Discrete Math

I have over 8 years of experience in tutoring, and 7 years of experience in actually using discrete math in the aerospace industry. I can help you with these and other topics:

- math for finance including interest and annuities
- systems of linear equations and matrices
- linear programming
- Markov chains
- difference equations
- logic and sets
- probability and elementary statistics

Matrix methods and Linear Programming are a specialty! I can help you understand it AND help you find the easiest ways to do your calculations.

Linear Algebra

I have professional experience in using linear algebra and matrix methods to solve problems in aerospace engineering -- specifically, problems in aircraft and spacecraft navigation.

My Ph.D. dissertation involved quadratic forms and eigenvalue-based methods of analyzing interactions between the different components in a model. I also taught a course in applied linear algebra for engineers that included matrix algebra, eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis, vector spaces, and least-squares methods.

I am very familiar with: linear systems of equations, matrix algebra, determinants, vector spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, orthogonality, least-squares methods, symmetric matrices and quadratic forms, the geometry of vector spaces, Markov chains, and applications of linear algebra to optimization problems including but not limited to linear programming.

I am the author, with I.B. Rhodes, of a matrix inequality theorem.

Logic

I have over 8 years' experience tutoring all kinds of undergraduate math, including logic. I can help you understand the following topics:

- statements
- negations, quantified statements, compound statements
- truth tables
- arguments
- equivalent statements
- DeMorgan's Laws
- arguments and Euler diagrams

I know multiple different ways of explaining these topics. One of them is bound to help you!

Prealgebra

I have extensive in tutoring people in pre-algebra, as well as in teaching it in the classroom at North Shore Community College.

My approach to tutoring is to ask you to show me what you have been doing; once we do that, I will tailor the lessons to your particular needs and learning style. I have a reputation for being able to help even the most stressed-out students!

I can help you understand any pre-algebra topic including:
- variables
- solving equations
- using formulas
and...
- THE DREADED WORD PROBLEMS.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Precalculus

I have extensive tutoring experience in precalculus. I will be happy to help you with any of the following:

- trigonometry (either right triangle or unit circle approach)
- functions and graphs
- analytic geometry, including equations for circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas
- limits
- sequences and series
- rates of change

I will probably begin by asking you to tell me what you already know and how you have been approaching your math homework; then I can work with you in a way that respects your learning style and your needs. I also have a reputation for being able to work with even the most frustrated students -- just in case you fit that description.

I am proficient with Texas Instruments graphing calculators, so if that is part of your curriculum, I can help you out there too.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Probability

I have over a decade's experience teaching probability and stats, and can give a clear and simple explanation for even the most complicated problems. I will begin with what you already understand, and then work from there! Proficient with TI graphing calculators, Minitab, and some Casio calculators. I can also help with Excel, either 2003 or later versions. An excellent listener who will personalize your tutoring session to your needs.

Statistics

With over a decade's teaching experience, I can give simple, clear explanations for even the most complex topics. I am proficient with TI graphing calculators, Minitab, and many Casio calculators; I can also help with Excel, SPSS, and JMP software.

Trigonometry

I have professional experience using trigonometry, as an aerospace engineer working with navigation calculations, so my knowledge is very thorough!

I understand how to explain trig concepts and calculations using either a right-triangle or a unit-circle approach.

If you work with me, I will begin by asking you to show me what you already understand. That will tell me what areas we need to work on, and how I need to adapt the lesson to your particular need and your particular learning style.

I look forward to hearing from you!
