Hello prospective students!
I am available to support elementary, middle, and high school students in academic and creative writing, reading comprehension, grammar practice, English conventions, and vocabulary study. I offer tutoring in English, social studies, study skills, and public speaking. I am happy to travel to your home or can meet at a local library.
I am a Massachusetts certified teacher with a license in English for grades 5-12, social studies for grades 5-8, and drama (which includes public speaking and performance skills) for grades K-12.
As a former journalist and middle school English teacher, my strength is in writing and editing, helping students generate ideas, as well as helping them organize thoughts and essays. We will work together to create strategies that they can then apply to other assignments.
I also have experience as a Title I Tutor, working on reading and math skills for students in grades 3-8. I observed their classes, worked with them one-on-one, in small groups, and after school in Homework Clubs. I also tutored special education students individually and have worked in learning centers as well.
I am currently earning my second master's degree in middle school humanities and would be happy to meet you and learn how I can best help you create learning strategies, study skills, organizational skills, and confidence.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you learn!
English - certified Middle and High school English teacher in Massachusetts, experience as a professional journalist and theatre director, also experienced in public speaking, research papers, and the writing process.
I have an undergraduate degree in Theatre Performance with coursework in voice and diction, breath support, posture and eye contact. I also have singing training that includes the use of one's diaphragm to project in public speaking. In addition, I hold a master's degree in Theatre Education and have experience directing theatre productions with both children and adults and have implemented many techniques to teach stage presence, projection, confidence, and performance skills. I can also assist in presentations incorporating both you as a speaker, your information incorporated into a PowerPoint presentation with other visuals, and other items you would like to display that will not distract from the key notes of your speech.
As a Title I Tutor, I helped students identify learning strategies that worked for them and still do when I tutor individual students. This includes highlighting directions, circling action words, using sticky note reminders for vocabulary, using context clues to find the meaning of words, or breaking down the word into its root or prefix and suffix. Then, I have the students record these strategies to use when they are working alone. These are only some of the skills I have identified for Language Arts. I have a number of other skills for Math and Organizational Needs.
I hold a B.A. in Theatre and an M.A. in Theatre Education. I have 2+years teaching middle school drama in public schools as well as 5+ years directing elementary, middle, and high school theatre productions. I have taught such subjects as theatre history, scene study, character development, improvisation, performance skills, and stage management.
