English and Public Speaking teacher w/ focus on writing

Hello,

I am a Massachusetts certified teacher with a license in English for grades 5-12, Social Studies for grades 5-8, and Drama (which includes Dramatic literature, public speaking, and performance skills) for grades K-12.

As a former journalist and middle school English teacher, my strength is in writing and editing, helping students generate ideas, as well as helping them organize thoughts and essays. We will work together to create strategies that they can then apply to other assignments.

I also have experience as a Title I Tutor, working on elementary reading and math skills for students in grades 3-8. I observed their classes, worked with them one-on-one, in small groups, and after school in Homework Clubs. I also tutored Special Education students individually and have worked in Learning Centers as well.

I am currently earning my second Masters degree in Middle School Humanities and would be happy to meet you and learn how I can best help you create learning strategies, study skills, organizational skills, and confidence.

Study Skills

As a Title I Tutor, I helped students identify learning strategies that worked for them and still do when I tutor individual students. This includes highlighting directions, circling action words, using sticky note reminders for vocabulary, using context clues to find the meaning of words, or breaking down the word into its root or prefix and suffix. Theatre

I hold a B.A. in Theatre and an M.A. in Theatre Education. I have 2+years teaching middle school drama in public schools as well as 5+ years directing elementary, middle, and high school theatre productions. I have taught such subjects as theatre history, scene study, character development, improvisation, performance skills, and stage management.

Public Speaking

I have an undergraduate degree in Theatre Performance with coursework in voice and diction, breath support, posture and eye contact. I also have singing training that includes the use of one's diaphragm to project in public speaking. I have a Middle School Humanities license to teach grades 5-8 social studies covering areas of ancient civilization, world history, geography and US History. I also just completed a graduate methods course entitled "Curriculum and Assessment in teaching History and Political Science to Middle School" in my second graduate program studying for an M.Ed. in Middle School Humanities. I also have undergraduate coursework in political science, government and journalism.
