I have been a high school Math teacher for the past 17 years and have tutored a number of students in preparation for the ACT, SAT, SSAT & GRE exams.

I generally use the AP Collegeboard test prep books. I start by having a student take a practice test and analyze their areas of weakness in terms of knowledge and test taking ability. Based on this I then prepare specific lessons designed to strengthen knowledge and skills. I also continue to give practice timed tests. As the exam approaches I design an individualized test taking strategy based on each student's strengths.

As a high school teacher I have taught many, many students with ADD/ADHD throughout the past 16 years. I also raised 3 children and both of my boys have ADHD. As a requirement of teaching I have taken many workshops and courses as well.

Algebra is the first math subject that requires students to think abstractly. It is the key to all high school math courses and essential for students to thoroughly grasp. Many students take this course in 8th grade but need extra practice in order to retain their skills. In most math courses that I teach I frequently need to reteach Algebra concepts before students can move forward in their current math course.

Algebra II is an extension of Algebra I and prepares students for PreCalculus. Many students struggle with this course because they have either not seen Algebra in over a year while studying Geometry or because they struggled with Algebra 1. The topics in Algebra II seem unrelated and I work with students to see the connections between all the different Algebra topics as well as how they relate to real world problems.

As a high school teacher I have taught many, many students with Autism/Aspergers throughout the past 16 years. Technically in the DSM, Aspergers is now considered Autism and is no longer a separate diagnoses.

In high school, all of our classes have inclusion and I have worked with these students with and without aids. I have also taken many courses and workshops about autism to better improve my teaching.

As a high school math teacher for the past 15+ yearsI have taught all levels of high school math including Discrete Math. It is a part of our high school curriculum and all math teachers are required to be able to teach all courses and all levels of high school math.

I have taught all high school math subjects for the past 16+ years and have tutored many students as well.

In addition, I have tutored a number of students in elementary, middle and high school in all levels of math. I have worked as a volunteer in my children's elementary school with students who struggle with math concepts.

I have used a number of different Geometry textbooks supplied by the schools (mostly McDougal Littell). Students tend to struggle most with Proofs. I start students with a non-math proof. For example, write a proof that you are aged 15 etc. I work with students to learn theorems, postulates, definitions and properties and how to use them in a proof. In addition I work with students in the study of polygons, area and volume.

I have tutored many students preparing for the GRE's. I took the GRE exam myself and scored 800 on the math section and 740 verbal. I work with students in the three areas that the GRE test: quantitative, verbal and writing. I give students practice tests and analyze their areas of weakness as well as their test taking practices. I then prepare lessons to improve their knowledge and test taking strategies. I continue to provided timed practice tests to assess progress. As the exam approaches I work with each student to plan their specific test strategy.

Before I became a high school teacher I was a Software Engineer with Digital Equipment Corporation for over 10 years. In my job I used many computer languages (COBOL, FORTRAN, ASSEMBLER, C, C++, Pascal, Lisp and Java). Java is distinct as it is an object-oriented language and currently the language used on the AP Computer Science test.

I start students with an introduction to basic Java syntax followed by data structures (primitive, arrays, lists and classes). Next we work on controlling the flow of the program through the use of loops and methods. Then we discuss searching and sorting algorithms and learn how to analyze them for efficiency.

If a student is taking AP Computer Science I teach them the current Case Study and have students work through problems that modify the case study.

Precalculus is a hodgepodge of seemingly unrelated topics required to learn Calculus including a polynomials, parametric, polar and vector equations, conic sections, exponents, logarithms, probability and a good amount of trigonometry. I try to connect all these topics for my students and foreshadow how they will be useful in Calculus. I show how each different function is used to model real world data and how the mathematical model is used to make predictions. By making connections and relating math to real examples my students are excited to learn the material.

I absolutely love Probability! I start by having students try to predict the probability that two of them in my classroom have the same birthday (in classes > 23 students) or lead a discussion about weather forecasting. Students are instantly engaged. I then teach them the basic principle of probability (# of favorable outcomes/ # of total outcomes). Next we work on Counting principles (nCr and nPr) followed by probability problems increasing in level of difficulty. I cover random variables and probability distributions.

For fun we talk about gambling odds and the probability of winning the lottery.

As a high school teacher I have taught many, many students with special needs throughout the past 16 years. I have worked with students diagnosed with the following: Aspergers, Autism, ADD, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Executive Functioning Disorder, Cognitive Function Disorder (from Concussions), Vision and Hearing Impairment, ESL (English as a Second Language), chronic migraines, color blindness and many more.

In high school, all of our classes have inclusion and I have worked with all of these students with and without aides. I have also taken many courses and workshops about special needs to better improve my teaching.

I was a member of the Varsity Swim Team throughout high school and college. I have coached and taught swimming lessons (all levels) for 30+ years). I have coached high school swimming and have taught Red Cross WSI and Lifeguard Training for many, many years.

Trigonometry is one of my favorite math subjects to teach! I show my students how the ratios of a right triangle (sine, cosine, tangent etc) allow us to solve real world problems such as the height of Mt. Everest, distance between the planets, or in the study of sound and light. I work from the unit circle and explain the importance of radian measure. I continue onto graphing transformations of trig functions and their inverses, solving trig equations and the use of trig in real world problems. I teach my students how to prove trig identities and why this is a valuable skill.

In addition I love to incorporate the history of Geometry, thousands of years old, long before calculators and computers.
