Are you a high school or college student struggling with reading comprehension, writing, and grammar? Do you require experienced instruction and high level support for SAT, ACT or GRE preparation, AP challenges, or those all-important college/graduate school application essays? With hard work, strong effort, honesty, and commitment, together we can achieve success. In short, I want my students to become the best writers and communicators they can possibly be. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and written and verbal clarity are not mere "interests" for me; quite simply, they are passions. I have consistently boosted my student's scores on all standardized Verbal and Writing testing. In many cases, I continue to offer assistance with both the Common Application and "school specific" essays. My investment in a student's education reaches far beyond test day.
I am a professional writer and editor by trade. A short synopsis of my experience is as follows: Editor of the Emory University award winning college paper; completion of a rigorous combined B.A. and M.A. degree program in English by age 21; a stint on Capitol Hill as a Congressional speech writer; nine years as Senior Writer, Producer, and Interviewer for MTV Networks in NYC; a decade as an Executive Producer at United Stations Radio Networks in NYC; and, most recently, a consultant for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington, D.C. for their 2013 core initiative, The American Graduate. This last experience with PBS and NPR stations cemented my desire to return to tutoring full-time to address the sobering decline in education and, perhaps, do what I do best.
As the mother of three, two of whom have graduated from notable Universities and my youngest now midway through his studies in Boston, I have learned firsthand how to strengthen and ingrain the essential skills of reading comprehension and proper written expression through a recipe of hard work and equally fun methodology. With more than 20 years of tutoring experience at top tier private and public high schools and universities in Massachusetts and Maryland, and more than 500 hours of WyzAnt tutoring alone, I am uniquely qualified to provide the highest level of support possible.
I have researched Aspergers and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder in great detail, dealt with special education matters in the Public School and Private School systems, and also worked closely with therapists, psychiatrists, school guidance counselors, and teachers. I have attended lectures and symposiums on Aspergers and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder at Yale and NYU and was also invited to the White House by Tipper Gore and President Clinton to attend and contribute to the White House Conference on Mental Health in 1999.
In addition to my lengthy career as a successful writer and editor, I have helped innumerable students, including my own three children, craft genuine, comprehensive, and ultimately winning college application essays. I help students create effective outlines, highlighting their particular interests, achievements, and general life experience. While I assist in helping to edit and develop strong, creative essays that address the prompt, I take care to ensure the essay reflects the students' own voice and personality. I am keenly aware of how to remain true to the student and the overall application process.
I am a specialist in GRE preparation, with particular emphasis on the Verbal and Essay Writing portions. I am currently preparing several college students for the next GRE and understand the stress of managing heavy course loads and graduate school requirements. My students are encouraged to take advantage of my ability to work with them online, as a supplement to our in-person tutorials. This is of particular importance if there is a need to strengthen writing skills and overall understanding of the Analytical Writing Assessment.
I have been writing and/or giving speeches for most of my adult life. I was very active in jr. and sr. high school in positions that required public speaking and held leadership positions at Emory University (Rush Chairman of my sorority and Editor of the college newspaper) that required constant public speaking roles. My first job out of graduate school was as a speech writer for a congressman on Capitol Hill. I spent years in NYC interviewing musicians and actors and have delivered many a speech both in and out of the office. And, finally, I spent nearly a decade writing and directing weekly scripts for my syndicated radio show.
I have successfully prepared innumerable students for the SAT, with particular emphasis on reading comprehension. I am certified by a nationally recognized organization in this field as well and have prepared my own set of informative and interesting tests to allow students to learn how to "read" between the lines. There is a method to test-taking and the SAT is no exception.
