My name is Julia and I am here to help you prepare for your next exam! I specialize in TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge First or Advanced Certificate and NATO's Oral Proficiency Exam. I am also available for conversational classes in English and Spanish.

I received my B.A in Latin American Studies with a minor in Spanish at Boston University in May 2012. I also received my Certification for English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), which is an intensive English as a Second Language teaching course accredited by Cambridge University. I have taught test preparation in Boston and in Madrid, Spain.

I am an enthusiastic, engaging teacher with experience as a literacy tutor with both adults and children at the Intergenerational Literacy Program in Chelsea, MA. I tutored adults studying for their high school equivalency exams. I also worked with children who were English language learners to develop literacy and fluency skills.

I speak Spanish and I also understand a little French and some Brazilian Portuguese.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

ESL is my specialty as a teacher. I have experience in large and small classes of students from all over the world. I help my students improve their fluency by working on grammar, vocabulary, reading and speaking skills. My students also have fun!

IELTS

After teaching for a year in Spain I have become an expert on this examination. This exam is very popular in Great Britain and therefore I was frequently asked about preparation methods while in Europe. My method of teaching this test is to familiarize students with the test as much as possible and to break down each section so that they are comfortable with all aspects of the test. The writing portion of this exam is especially challenging for students so I have many exercises to practice this section.

Reading

I worked as a literacy tutor in an after school program for 2 years during college. I worked with children ranging from ages 4-13. Many of my students developed a love for reading while working with me.

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for 16 years and I spent one year abroad in Ecuador at a private university. I can teach beginner and low-intermediate levels.

TOEFL

I am currently employed as a TOEFL instructor in a language school in Boston. I use specific test strategies to prepare even lower level English students for the TOEFL.

You may ask what, besides being certified as an ESL teacher by Cambridge University, qualifies me to teach English to non-native speakers. This is a totally valid question. I sometimes ask myself the same thing when I am planning lessons. What is the aim of this lesson? What are the sub-aims? How can I engage my students? And, what right do I have to assume all this authority? Yes, I have spoken... read more

Keeping students motivated while studying for the TOEFL is hard work. The books used for preparing for the test are gigantic, the time limits are stringent and scheduling constraints are often excessive. In order to head off demotivation, it is crucial to vary materials. That's right. Mix it up! Write an essay on a topic that interests you, like truffle hunting or motocross or the psychological... read more
