I have tutored children with learning disabilities in elementary school in Reading, Language Arts, Math, and Writing, as well as students in a residential school (ages 5-22) with a variety of neurological diagnoses such as Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, encephalitis, and Spina Bifida. In the residential school I have also worked on subjects such as history, geography, social studies and social skills. I have had 28 students in all.
I graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston with a major in Rehab Counseling/Sociology with a GPA of 3.76. I obtained a Master's Degree from Wheelock College in Child Life. I worked in the field of Special Needs as a Case Manager at Crotched Mountain Rehab Center and a Social Worker at SevenHills at Groton.
I have held a variety of volunteer jobs with children since 1986. Some of my volunteer jobs have been at Children's Hospital Boston, Partners for Youth With Disabilities, in the reading program at Greenfield Elementary School Greenfield, NH, and with Horizons for Homeless Children.
I have worked with many students with ADHD at Crotched Mountain Rehab Center where I was a Case Manager for 7 years and then a tutor for 4 years. Crotched Mountain is a Residential School for students aged 5-22 with moderate to severe special needs.
I have worked with students with Dyslexia as a tutor for 4 years.
During the 4.5 years I have been a tutor I have tutored 10 students with learning disabilities in public elementary schools in reading, and 5 public elementary school students in both reading and math. These students were in grades k-4. I have also tutored 14 students with physical and learning disabilities at Crotched Mountain Rehab Center, from ages 5-22. Seven of these students (ages 16-22) were working on a 6th grade level. Three of them had Traumatic Brain Injuries and had splinter skills past the 6th grade. One student I had, ages 17 was working on a high school level the whole time I worked with him.
Over the past 4.5 years as a tutor I have worked with 4 students where I used phonics as a tool to teach reading. The material I have used comes from ReadingA-Z.com and k12reader.com. I obtained a Master's Degree from Wheelock College in Child Life.
I have worked or volunteered with children with Special Needs for 27 years. I worked with children as a Case Manager at Crotched Mountain Rehab Center from 1992-1999 and at SevenHills at Groton from 1999-2005.
