My teaching style: I prefer to direct students toward answers instead of giving the student the correct answer after a single wrong answer. Usually this involves determining where in the thought process the student is stuck and giving a little nudge in the right direction. Afterward, I double check with the student to make sure the concept is understood before moving on. I am very patient and willing to wait until the student understands the concepts, but I also understand that time is money, and won't spend an entire session on one question. I'm very personable and have tutored and mentored students for the better part of the past ten years. I like to incorporate analogies and real world examples into my lessons to help student gain a better grasp of abstract concepts.
About me: I graduated from MIT with a bachelor's in Materials Science and Engineering. Following that, I earned my master's at Columbia University in the same field. Materials Science has a large focus on applied chemistry, but also involves a bit of math as well. Following school, I worked as a Process Engineer at a start-up company north of Boston for a number of years. I also enjoy reading various genres (science, fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, business, etc.) in my spare time and recently published a book of my own.
Scheduling Note: Since I work during the day, most of my tutoring availability is in the evening during the week and weekends. I only meet in public places (libraries, coffee shops, etc.) so please keep that in mind when determining a location for sessions. Ryan has such a unique way of taking a difficult subject matter and making it into easy conversation so that my daughter can understand. Ryan has given my daughter the confidence she needed to become an honor student. Thank you Ryan.
The feedback I get from my son - Ryan's student - is that Ryan is reviewing pre-algebra concepts in a way that my son is clearly understanding. While my son's grades are not yet where he would like them to be, they have improved since he started getting tutored by Ryan.
My son did OK on the SATs but wanted to try them again to improve his score. Ryan has been a great tutor for him over the years and I am so happy with the results with my son. I can see the improvement in his confidence and I think he will do better this November.
Thank you Ryan for all your help.
My son is pretty happy right now, he says that Ryan seems to know the answer to any questions he has. He has help him see clarity to some math problems that he had a problem with.
Ryan is a very patient tutor! His explanation of specific algebra problems helped me further my understanding of problems I was struggling with. I highly recommend Ryan as a tutor!
Ryan has been very helpful with working with me on learning how to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint for my college class. He is great at explaining concepts and patient when it comes to explaining concepts.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
