I have tutored ESL students in English and social studies and the college level -- with an emphasis on essay writing, reading comprehension, and conversational practices. I have also tutored mental health clinicians in psychology and clinical interviewing skills. My strength is my ability to meet a student where he or she is at, and thinking outside the box. Additionally, I have tutored Pre-K children in basic reading and writing skills, with an emphasis on social skills and confidence-building exercises
Time-line and Additional Specifics
From August to now I have been a private tutor to clinicians in training where I reviewed their work and coached them in their efforts to apply psychotherapy interventions in their clinical work. From January 2009 to April 2010 I tutored college students, the majority from abroad, in English (a lot of ESL), Psychology, and Sociology. Common activities involved reviewing essays, breaking down concepts, practicing English pronunciation, going over study techniques, as well as listening to student's personal stories and facilitating adaptation and integration skills around adjustment to US culture. From 2007 to 2009 I taught and tutored children aged 4 and 5 in basic reading and writing skills, with a special emphasis on social skills and confidence-building games.
My own academic pursuits, mostly in the social sciences and in English, resulted in a college career dotted with straight As.
P.S. A note to prospective students: tutoring involves breaking down concepts, explaining and clarifying concepts, looking over assignments together and making sure that the student understands what is expected and that he or she understands the concepts involved; the tutoring process is collaborative, it entails thinking things through together, looking at organization and structure of essays, brain-storming ideas for writing together, proof-reading, etc. It is a collaborative process but the student is doing the work, the heavy-lifting in terms of actually writing the paper, taking the exam, or doing the reading that is required for the assignment. Tutoring is not where the tutor actually types up papers for you or does all the reading for you, that is something else and is not a part of the services that I offer.
I majored in Sociology in college. I graduated from college with straight As. I tutored sociology at the college level for one year.
I have worked with special needs populations for a total of 10 years; I have worked as a life-coach in a residential setting where I helped individuals -- teens -- diagnosed with autism, down-syndrome, and mood-disorders with basic living skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and help with school work. I have also worked with a similar special needs population -- adults -- at a work-place facility that served as the day job facility of the population I worked with; there I would assist them in their work duties, which included making musical instruments. I have also worked with special needs children between the ages of 5 and 13 as a summer camp counselor; this work entailed a lot of arts and crafts activities, including song, dance, sports, and theater.
