I teach Math Enrichment at the Timilty Middle School in Boston. During the school year, I tutored 7th and 8th graders in Saturday school. I am currently tutoring, mentoring, and supervising an on-line summer school program for 7th and 8th graders who need to catch up with some coursework. I am working with my principal, using MCAS math questions to evaluate math instruction, with the goal of helping teachers better help their students.
Understanding the WHAT in a math question, and challenging my students to think beyond the formulas, is one thing I like to focus on. I also like to work with students on comprehensive project-like questions that are just a little too hard. I have developed some problems that combine number sense, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and decision-making -- for example: how to maximize profit.
