I completed my Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Mathematics Education from Boston University in 2010. I have Massachusetts licensure to teach middle and high school mathematics, and I am employed teaching Algebra 1, Geometry, and Precalculus in the Boston area.
My experience at Boston University helped to support and develop many intuitive strategies from my previous teaching positions. Prior to moving to Boston to attend BU, I spent three years teaching mathematics in private schools. I worked for two years at a private all-girls boarding school in rural Virginia for two years, teaching all Algebra I and Algebra II classes at the school. I also managed a residence hall and coached lacrosse, field hockey, and the dance team. I also taught for one year at a private co-educational prep school in New Jersey. There, I taught Geometry, Algebra II, and Algebra II Honors. This past spring semester I taught both Algebra II and Advanced Math at a public high school in the Boston area through my BU practicum. I finished off the school year at a charter school, teaching Geometry/Algebra II for advanced freshmen students for the last four weeks of school. I taught a varied courseload of Geometry, Algebra I, and Precalculus for two years at an all girls private school, and I am starting a new position at a charter school focusing only on Geometry. In addition to these classroom experiences, I have spent the past six years privately tutoring students in various courses including Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, Trigonometry, US History, Study Skills, and Writing.
Having witnessed “learned helplessness” and math phobias, both in private school settings and my practicum experience, I strive to help students to develop positive attitudes regarding mathematics. Mathematics is a stepping stone, not a frustrating high school class. I use my energy and enthusiasm to promote positivity and active learning, helping all students access the mathematics curriculum. I truly believe all students can and will succeed in mathematics, learning skills which will help them in their everyday lives and open doors to additional career possibilities. My former students have said that I have helped them both increase their grades and their interest/enjoyment in Mathematics, and I hope to help you or your son/daughter to do the same!
