I'm a happily married father of two boys, four and seven, and live in Ispwich. I've always enjoyed solving math problems and was able to do some tutoring right after college that entailed one on one math session and SAT test preparation. Why do I want to tutor now? Because I want your son or daughter to succeed in the subject. As a high school student, English and history were more challenging for me. Having an enthusiastic tutor in those subjects would have helped me tremendously. I'd like to share my enthusiasm for the subject and help your child work towards their goals.

My methods are suited to each child's needs. I can spend time on individual problem exercises, or I can provide general instruction on math topics. As an environmental consultant, I have worked with a wide range of people and have enjoyed the interaction very much. Much of my work entailed explaining complex problems to my clients in language that they could understand. I look forward to taking a similar approach with your child.

I have a B.A. from Middlebury College with a major in Geography and minor in mathematics and an M.S. from Utah State University in Geography.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I was a straight A student in Algebra. After college I was an algebra tutor for some 10th grade students. I am comfortable explaining variables, how to solve for a variable and how to make a graph from a function such as y=mx+b.

Algebra 2

I was a straight A student in algebra.
I can help your student with more advanced algebra concepts such as solving polynomials and the quadratic equation. I can work with your child to develop approaches that can help solve polynomial equations.

Geometry

I was a straight A student in geometry.
I can help your student understand various formulas used in geometry such as those that are used to solve for perimeter, area and volume.

Microsoft Excel

I have almost 20 years of experience working with MS Excel. I can help your student with several different aspects of the program. Some of the functionality that I would be happy to explain are: using formulas in a cell, sorting data and using the subtotal function, creating pivot tables and pivot charts, how to format a table so it can fit well on a page, using tabs and linking data from one tab to the next, and making charts and graphs.

Microsoft Word

I have almost 20 years of experience with MS Word. I wrote my master's thesis with it and I have written numerous lengthy documents using the program. Some of the aspects of the program that I would be happy to teach you include: making an outline, using styles to ensure formatting consistency, generating a table of contents, table of figures and table of tables, and creating a bibliography and storing your references in the program.

* understanding less than, greater than and equal to

Precalculus

SAT Math

I was an SAT tutor for a few months right after college. I very much enjoyed the work and working with student. I understand that the test can be stressful for many students. Practice and review are very helpful in preparing for the test. As a tutor, I can help your student work out word problems, and develop formulas quickly.

Trigonometry

I can help your student understand trigonometric equations such as sine, cosine and tangent, how the unit circle works and and how trigonometric equations can be solved.

I've managed to tutor a number of students this year and it has all been very rewarding and enjoyable. Every now and then, I have seen the proverbial light bulb go off in a student's mind when they start to grasp the subject. It's moments like this that I feel very lucky to have such an opportunity to work with students. It's a really enjoyable experience for me as a tutor and it's a bit reason... read more

If you are reading this, then I have your attention and for that, I am grateful. If you are having any difficulty with various math subjects, I would not only be very happy to help, but also quite grateful for the opportunity to work with you. I'm looking forward to helping you succeed.

I try to get information from a number of different sources. One of them is the Harvard Business Review podcast.
