I have taught high school English for 10 years, from freshman to AP Literature. I have extensive experience in college applications and essays, college writing and working with ELL students. Before I taught, I was a journalist and newspaper editor. In teaching AP Literature and 10th grade English, I understand how to improve writing for individual students and to coach them to succeed in high-stakes testing.

College Counseling

I have worked with students for more than 10 years with the college selection and application process. I help students completing and proofreading applications and resumes. A major part of the process is to work on essays and supplements, making sure students have completed the information necessary while still making sure their voice and talent shines through in their writing. Students I have worked with are in a variety of excellent colleges around the country.

English

Experienced in teaching literature, reading and writing. Have had success in working with students on process - everyone is an individual and everyone has a different approach. I work on finding a student's talents and using them to help unlock the keys to literature, understanding how writers use tools to tell their stories.

GED

I have taught high school for 10 years and have tutored high school and college students. I am experienced in teaching literature, reading and writing. I have had success in working with students both understanding content of the tests and giving strategies for successful test taking.

Praxis

I have successfully tutored some former students and friends' children in Praxis, including, just this summer, a friend's child who was on a tight deadline to pass the exam so he could continue his coursework in education. The test is very much centered on proper English usage, so if you can teach the rules of grammar and the exceptions, it's easier to feel confident. The students I have worked with have taken both the written and computer formats of the test. Most of them went from unsuccessful tries on the test to passing.

Public Speaking

As a part of my own college education as a journalism major at Syracuse University, I studied public speaking as a part of the television, radio, film program. As a journalist, I was a member of the Speaker's Bureau at The Eagle-Tribune. Now in my role as a teacher, I work with students on public speaking through my journalism class, as well as in all ELA classes where public presentation is a requirement.

Special Needs

Every year I have taught, I have had students with a variety of learning disabilities in every class. As a teacher, I have had the training and the experience to differentiate the learning and tailor work to the specific needs of these students. In addition, I have a variety of methods, including graphic organizers, strategies in reading and writing and practice exercise to help these students build confidence and work to meet their goals and expectations.

Writing

I have 10 years of experience working with students at all levels and as a high school teacher I have continued to coach dozens of my students through their college years. I work with students to understand the structure of writing, basically planning out writing and understanding the focus, which makes the process a lot easier. Writing is overwhelming for lots of students, and I have a good understanding of the process, not just because I have taught high school, but many of my students are learning to write in their second language, which helps me understand the process even better.

Awesome Tutor! Sondra is great and a pleasure to work with. She is supportive and patient. I struggle with writing and she really helped me pull my grade up. Sondra was eager to help me and did a wonderful job by giving helpful feedback, and was quick getting back to me through emails. I was fortunate to have found her. Thank you Sondra, I look forward to working with you again. You are the best! ...
