I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Communication and a Writing minor. I've tutored at both the high school and college levels. Before becoming a full time mother, I applied my writing and public speaking skills in the field of college alumni relations. In high school, I excelled in AP English Literature and AP US History and earned a near-perfect verbal SAT score.
Whether I'm using my theater background to help a student master Shakespeare, breaking down the Latin roots of vocabulary words for SAT preparation, or helping an individual to craft a compelling position paper, I truly love seeing a student's face light up in the "ah-ha" moments when some long-elusive concept finally clicks into place.
I believe that the greatest gift a tutor can give a student is a love of learning, and that love begins with building the student's confidence in his ABILITY to learn. Frustration and anxiety can lead to self-perpetuating cycles of failure. A tutor's job is to break that cycle.
I do this by first evaluating a student's initial grasp of the subject, identifying areas of strength and weakness, and then working with the individual's learning style to build mastery of the subject while teaching techniques that can be applied to any subject at any level. I am willing to communicate with parents and teachers as necessary to establish goals and modify strategies.
I have been a grammarian all my life. My education and experience in writing and proofreading have kept my skills sharp, and I enjoy teaching students how to crack the code of English grammar. I break down sentence structure and use humorous examples of incorrect grammar to help students understand not only correct parts of speech and punctuation, but how small changes alter the meaning of a sentence.
I am a voracious reader and a lover of the classics. I help students improve their comprehension and increase their enjoyment of great works of literature through several methods. I break down character motivations, strengths and flaws, emphasize historical context, explore how the work compares and pertains to life today, and help students to ask questions that lead to a deeper understanding of the characters and their circumstances.
I have read and written on everything from Shakespeare and Dostoevsky to scientific research papers and political essays. I help students learn to identify the author's intent, evaluate the piece as it relates to other works and ask questions about how the piece fits into the time and place in which it was written. Strong reading skills improve critical thinking and writing skills and lead to success that goes far beyond the classroom.
I achieved a score of 780 on the verbal section of the SAT and I know that SAT reading is all about critical thinking and time management. I help students learn to be efficient and critical readers by looking for key elements that allow them to quickly identify the author's purpose, analyze the effectiveness of the piece and find the relationships between statements. Improving comprehension and the ability to draw inferences while increasing overall speed inevitably leads to higher scores.
Spelling isn't all rote memorization and flashcards. Students can be taught to spell even words they have never encountered before by learning to recognize Latin, Greek and Germanic roots as well as suffixes and prefixes. I also make heavy use of mnemonics to help tricky words stick long after rote memorization would have worn off.
In my academic and professional careers I have written everything from argument essays and speeches to research papers and magazine articles. Each requires a different voice and style, but there are basic skills that can help a student master any kind of writing. I teach students how to organize their thoughts, write effective outlines and drafts, fill out details, and evaluate and enhance the strength of their statements. Being able to communicate effectively in writing is critical to virtually every aspect of life. I help students build the skills necessary for long term success.
