Dear Parent,

Having been trained by and tutoring through Literacy Volunteers of America, I have discovered that teaching is my passion and wish to make it my vocation.

My teaching method is student-centered; pace is set according to each student's ability, thus ensuring that the student has thorough knowledge of the subject matter prior to moving forward. I identify each student's strongest learning style(s), i.e. visual, auditory, kinesthetic (learning via repetitive writing) and/or tactile. My lesson plans are developed with an emphasis on the learners strongest learning styles, and using materials relevant to the student's interests. Patience, humor and fun are key to the learning process, each of which I have in abundance. I am experienced in teaching reading, reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. I also teach basic computer skills and have found the computer to be a fun and effective teaching tool.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

My tutoring techniques are student-centered and include:

-Identifying the student's strongest learning style(s), i.e. Auditory, Tactile Kinesthetic and/or Visual;
-Identify student's hobbies and interests;
-Identify any specific reading issues, i.e. difficulty with vowel sounds, consonant sounds and or comprehension;
-Develop lesson plans based on above;
-Where appropriate include humor and most important, patience.

Writing

"Writing" is actually a compilation of vocabulary, punctuation and grammar. In addition, the student must first understand what constitutes a complete sentence; a complete thought including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. Once that it accomplished, we move on to combining sentences which relate to one another. "Writing" is a step by step process, an evolution, moving ever forward. As always, writing must be fun, interesting and relate the the student's interests. I've had great success utilizing a student-centered approach, to ensure that the student truly understands what has been taught, before moving on to the next step.
