I specialize in providing remediation of reading and writing skills for students of all ages - including high school and college students. I use direct, explicit instruction and repeated practice to teach reading skills. I teach students who struggle with the art of writing effectively through the use of framed paragraphs, graphic organizers, questioning, prompting, and examples. I also provide remediation in math skills such as teaching the four basic operations through stories, pictures, manipulatives, and mnemonics. I bring experience as a former classroom teacher, reading specialist, and homeschooler to my tutoring practice.
It is important that a student is matched well with a tutor, and the tutor must build a good working relationship with the student and parents. To that end, I take time to get to know a student and use a variety of assessments in order to target the student's specific needs. I formulate a plan with input from the student and parents in order to make the best use of our time. During each session I provide the student with strategies and skills, give feedback on performance, motivate the student with praise, and use humor to engage the student. I also work closely with parents to provide progress updates, discuss concerns, and problem-solve together. I will attend IEP meetings if parents request it.
**Common Application: I assist high school students with writing the essay for the Common Application as well as essays for particular colleges and universities. The requirements for the Common Application essay have changed this year, and I can help a student to write a concise and vivid essay. Often it takes 6-8 tutoring sessions to complete the essay if a student is willing to work on it independently.**
I provide students with the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
