I have many years of experience tutoring students with ADD or ADHD, and worked as a specialist in teaching ADD students with a company called Pinacle Prep in New York City. I find ways to keep the students engaged and interested in ways tailor-made for what captures their attention. I myself worked through ADD as a student in high school.
I have been playing (and winning) pick-up basketball my whole life. I was a swimmer in high school, so I couldn't play team hoops because it was during the same season, but I know the formal technique can help to train your shootings skills, stamina, and basic playing strategy. Or we can just shoot around for fun.
I recently had a paid position at a large after school program call Midtown Center for Boys in Chicago, where I was the instructor for a class called "College Readiness." I taught juniors all about choosing colleges, the different criteria for the choices, and how to create a college list. We also examined the application process, going over in detail the essays, standardized tests, AP tests, and how to present oneself overall in an application. We also discussed the various aspects of college life and how to prepare wisely for a career.
I have tutored many juniors and seniors and walked them through many applications, essays, and standardized tests. Many of my students were accepted at top universities.
I have taught many young people in all school subjects, including Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. I have trained students for all levels of the SSAT, ISEE, and other assessment tests and entrance exams. From beginning reading, writing, and math, all the way to social studies and beginning French, I have the training and experience to help young people learn and establish good study habits. A long time volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and youth trainer, I have experience and love for helping young folks find their way and excel.
I received my masters degree in Film Directing from California Institute of the Arts in 2010, and have received grants and film festival awards for my movies. I can teach film and video production, screenwriting basics, acting and performance, and video editing.
I trained in folk and rock guitar, and have performed professionally for a number of different bands as a singer/backup guitarist. I have taught a number of students the basics and enjoy sharing the pastime of helping people learning to play and sing their favorite songs.
I have worked with Macs since I was a child, and I am fluent in video systems including Final Cut Studio, as well as Microsoft Office.
I have experience in leadership positions as a film and theater director, and I worked as an actor for many years. I studied voice and diction, as well as performance in general. I can help you learn to train your voice and your mind to share the information clearly and graciously, and we can practice so that you'll feel at ease and confident when speaking in public.
I have trained many students to prepare for the SSAT, with very good results. We approach the test systematically, and hone in on your trouble areas to strengthen them. We build up to taking full-length practice tests to track your progress. It's fun! Especially when you see how much the score improves each week.
I have training and experience in teaching study skills - making schedules, setting time-sensitive goals, and establishing patterns of consistent review for exams. I have taught study skills to many students, ages 12-19.
I swam competitively for two out of three seasons growing up, all the way through high school. I was captain of my high school swimming team, and helped coach the younger kids. I can help with techniques on all strokes. I can also help you learn to swim from scratch, if you're just getting started.
I performed in and directed plays for six years in New York City, and studied with many of the great acting teachers alive today. I have a strong understanding of Method Acting as well as song or text-based performance art, through the traditions of Lee Strasberg and Jerzy Grotowski. I can help make monologues more believable, I can help make Shakespeare more alive and accessible, and I can help you become a stronger actor, through a good attitude and a good, solid bag of tools.
I have an MFA in Film Directing from California Institute of the Arts, and have made many of my own films and worked on many more. We can study screenwriting, shooting and other aspects of production, and/or editing, examining professional techniques from the pros and applying them in your own work.
I have sung in six different a cappella groups and choruses, and have lead three of them. I also studied voice training professionally for many years. I can help you learn to control the muscles of the voice in a way that brings out an alive, natural tone - and we can work on songs of your choosing.
