I have over 30 years of experience in the field of education, both as a teacher and as a curriculum developer, with a strong specialty in mathematics. I have worked with a wide range of grade levels, from elementary school to college. I received a BA in math from Harvard University and a Masters in Education from the University of New Hampshire with a double concentration in elementary education and secondary math education. I hold MA certification for secondary mathematics (Gr. 7-12) and for elementary education (K-6).
I love tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to design a customized program and approach to meet each student’s unique learning style and content needs. My emphasis is on careful diagnosis to identify and address any gaps or weaknesses in prior knowledge, on building a strong understanding of concepts and WHY procedures work, and on fostering a student’s self-confidence and self-reliance. I can also provide enrichment and challenge activities to stretch students’ understanding and help them experience the joy and excitement of math.
As an elementary school teacher, I have also taught writing skills (including spelling) and creative writing, and I have led literature discussion groups. In my many years as a homeroom teacher and advisor, I have gained extensive experience in helping students develop effective study skills and organizational strategies.
